Faculty Spotlight: Kristen Sosulski

Dr. Kristen Sosulski is a Clinical Associate Professor of Information, Operations & Management Sciences in the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University, where she teaches MBA students and executives data visualization, computer programming and business analytics. She is also the Director for the Learning Science Lab for NYU Stern, where she develops immersive face-to-face and online learning experiences to advance business school education.

This interview has been edited for clarity.

Hello Kristen, first thank you for agreeing to speak to the Stern Oppy!

I know we’re amid finals and it is a busy time for students and professors alike, so I appreciate you making the time for us today.

Stern Somebody: Eryn Park

The Oppy staff is proud to continue a feature called “Stern Somebody,” telling the stories of remarkable classmates and how they became the exceptional people they are today.

If there is one place Eryn Park never thought she would be at this point in her life, it’s a soon-to-be MBA graduate working as a product marketing manager for a sustainable beauty brand. Since childhood, she’s always dreamed of moving to NYC and becoming a pastry chef. She cites the muffin man scene from Shrek as having a huge impact on her. The gumdrop buttons! So she packed up, moved across the country for undergrad at NYU, and worked her way up from fine dining kitchen intern to executive pastry chef.…

Stern Singles Presents: Shaina Himelstein

Meet the incredible Shaina! I had the pleasure of meeting Shaina doing Leadership Fellows this last year and have been continuously impressed by the person she is and her humility. I remember the first session of LF and hearing that she worked at Burger King. This idiot (yours truly) thought that she worked AT a Burger King. But no, no, she was in senior management for the corporation of BK, not flipping burgers. She was just so humble about all her incredible life experiences. She is now an MBA2 graduating this month and heading off to work at Meta in Global Operations.…

Stern Singles Presents: Sam Pollack

Sam is a full time MBA candidate graduating in May. He is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and has lived in Washington, D.C. and Newport Beach, CA before coming to Stern. Hobbies include golf, tennis, traveling, and poker. He is passionate about all things finance, holds a CFA charter, and garnered more than 2 million page views as a writer for Seeking Alpha (prior to graduating college). He is focused on using his skills to help make the world a better place.

Sternie Testimonials:

“Everyone knows that Sam is one of the smartest students in class, but his niceness and generosity make him stand out in a class crowded with amazing people.

Stern Singles Presents: Nicolette Wong

Nicolette is an MBA2 in the full time program, and is set to graduate later this month. She is originally from Singapore, where she used to be a writer and editor in the luxury magazine industry. She seized the opportunities at Stern to pivot careers, and will be heading to Mastercard post-graduation. She hasn’t had any kind of routine for two years, but can reliably be found digging into good food or petting a fuzzy creature. She can’t believe that her MBA experience is about to end, but is excited for what lies ahead.

Sternie Testimonials:

“Most people know of Nicolette as the resident fashionista of our class, but to me, she is that one person who knows all the things — she has great taste in food and drink, offers the best beauty tips and tricks, and is the voice of reason for her friends who are figuring out what to do with their lives.”

Stern Singles Presents: Ashley Joseph

Oh, you haven’t met Ashley Joseph? Just know that her beloved dog, Bella, literally skips and frolics when walking with Ashley. Puppies never lie. That could be you, skipping through life, but you keep ducking happiness. Duck no more. Get to know Ashley and frolic through life yourself. You’re welcome! Don’t take my word for it though, just look at the testimonials from fellow Sternies.

Sternie Testimonials:

“The girl you take to brunch but also want to marry, that is Ashley. By far one of the most caring and selfless people I have met in my life, she is there for you through thick and thin.

One Final Note on My Time at Stern

I never learned to use Excel.

In my previous life I was a sportswriter who became a sports web producer who became a sports content strategist who became a sports digital jack of all trades. Well, not all trades because, you see, I never learned to use Excel.

For the first 12 years of my post-college life, spreadsheets, or for that matter business school, were never on my radar. I didn’t see the point of leaving the career in sports media I had always dreamed of, and, in any event, I never considered myself much of a businessman. With hindsight I now understand that I was lying to myself to some degree.…

The Save Soil Movement

“The magic of soil is to turn death into life.” – Mr. Jaggi Vasudev

Sternies, as spring is springing around us and you feel tempted by the colors of the blossoming flowers, the thrill of eating on patios surrounded by plastic or (occasionally) real leaves, the deliciousness of freshly squeezed orange juice coming out of a wholesome orange, and fulfilling bike rides around Central Park to enjoy the smell of the green grass, you may want to think about the ultimate enabler of all that happiness, i.e., the soil.

WHY DO I CARE ABOUT SOIL?

It’s easy to forget about soil in New York because we can hardly spot it.…
