SternReads: The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

You will enjoy this if:you are looking for a light-hearted sci-fi novel, you enjoyed the nerdy exposition in The Martian or Project Hail Mary, you want to read a less serious Jurassic Park, you enjoyed Murderbot!

Not long after I moved to New York, I hit what avid readers would call a reading slump.

Whether it was the stress of moving to a new city, homesickness, the anxiety of recruiting or a combination of the three, I could not say. Whereas stories were once an escape, now reading anything at all felt too hard. For someone who could once read a thousand-page tome while standing in a six o’clock rush hour train, this was nothing short of a nightmare.…

Return of the Gotham Cup (or, How to Support a Great Charity While Showing CBS Who’s Boss)

By Henry Mumford

What could be better than walking around outside with a bunch of Sternies, having a few drinks, and (if you want) beating up on those people uptown at CBS in some friendly competition? We agree, not much. That’s why People at Stern who love Golf * are partnering with the Young Benefactors of First Tee – Met NY to bring back the Gotham Cup!

Join us on April 23rd at Dyker Beach for the Gotham Cup. Play in the competitive Battle of the MBAs (sponsored by Five Iron), or relax in the friendly division – golfers of all skill levels are welcome.…

Stern Singles Presents: Aya Philémon

Aya is a full time MBA student, but she is also a comic book artist, designer, and cosplayer. After getting her BFA in Industrial Design from Rhode Island School of Design, she spent the next few years appearing on a PBS documentary show and touring movie and television sets as an extra and day player before settling in at a desk to work in advertising. She is now using her MBA to pivot back into product development at Adobe Innovation Labs. In her spare time, she can be found either in the ballet studio, hunched over Photoshop making memes, or on her couch playing Horizon: Forbidden West.…

The Graduate: Jolawn Victor, Chief International Officer at Headspace

This month’s The Graduate features Jolawn Victor, MBA ‘09, Chief International Officer of Headspace, Inc, where she oversees Headspace’s international operations and expansion. Headspace is a mindfulness app containing guided meditations and sleep-casts that promote a better mind and overall well-being. Her career began in engineering, followed by an MBA at Stern that pivoted her to marketing, and she ultimately transitioned from consumer packaged goods to technology. Jolawn’s global C-suite executive role now is the culmination of her experience spanning numerous industries, markets, and continents. I had the pleasure of getting to know Jolawn from not just a career standpoint, but from one that anyone (especially women) can find inspiring in making your mark in any room you step into.…

Stern Faculty Spotlight: Michael S. North

Our Stern Faculty Spotlight this month is on Dr. Michael S. North, Assistant Professor of Management and Organization, and the Founding Director of the Accommodating Generations in Employment (AGE) Initiative, focusing on cutting-edge topics in intergenerational workforces and workplaces. Professor North’s work has been featured in various media sources, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, BBC, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Forbes, and TIME. He has been named a “Rising Star” by the Association for Psychological Science, and a “Top 50 Undergraduate Business School Professor” by Poets and Quants.

As The Oppy Interviewer walked in, she was pleasantly surprised to see a different avatar of the Professor than in his classes (normally in a formal blazer).

B-School Newspaper Coalition: April 2022 Roundup

Last year, The Oppy reached out to other business school newspapers around the country to get a sense of how they’re running their papers. After meeting with several editors-in-chief from MBA programs, we decided to form a coalition with a small but growing group of top graduate business schools. We are going to share some of their best articles from their monthly issues.

For April, we have ChiBus, the newspaper from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Some of the interesting reads from their last issue are:

Answering the Call of the Wild: Life in Alaska

Val Cassan (’22) makes the most of virtual classes by spending a few weeks in a remote Alaskan village, an entirely atypical MBA experience.
