Stern Singles Presents: Kate Burke

Welcome back to another addition of Stern Singles! We are so happy to present you COVID cuties with April’s most eligible bachelorette, Kate Burke.

Sternie Testimonials:

“ I’m so glad to have gone on this MBA journey with someone who perfectly emulates Kris Jenner energy.”

I am frightened AND intrigued.

“Kate has this sense of humor that sneaks up on you, but cuts right to the heart of things. She’s the only person who’s made me feel enlightened as beer shoots out my nose”

That’s the type of release we all need right now.

Kate graced the Stern Community emerging onto the scene in Fall 2017, as a proud Blue Block member.…

MBA Blind Love

In March, an MBA edition of Love Is Blind, called MBA Blind Love, began among students of some of the top business schools in the U.S. These schools included Stern, Columbia, Wharton, Yale, Kellogg, Booth, Sloan, HBS, Stanford, and Yale…just to name a few.

Two single Oppy Board members decided to partake – for journalistic research purposes, of course – and then had the pleasure of interviewing the founder, Anna Li.

So how exactly is it done? B-school students from across the U.S. can sign up on the MBA Blind Love website with their school emails. Then you have to create an anonymous email so that you can receive and begin corresponding with your matches without disclosing your identity.…

Faculty Insights: COVID-19 and NYC

By JP Eggers, Vice Dean of MBA and Graduate Programs

The COVID-19 virus has rapidly impacted society on a global level in ways few of us could have imagined only 6 months ago.  While the fight to stem the incidence and impact of the coronavirus takes place, the fiscal and economic shocks caused by this fight and its after-effects are only beginning to be understood. In 2008, when the global financial crisis shook the business and public sectors, NYU Stern built on its expertise in financial markets, global economics, and policy in a cross-department effort to make sense of the flaws in the market structure that led to the crisis.…

The Phases of Quarantine (for Non-Essential Workers)

Day 1: This lockdown will be my Hot Girl Quarantine – time to get in shape!

  • Proceeds to InstaCart – only fresh fruit and veggies, keeping snacks at home is too unsafe. Orders Booty Bands and dumbbells through Amazon. When the groceries and packages get delivered, uses pounds of disinfectant on the outsides of all the bags and packaging. Admires the colorful fridge full of fresh food and the colorful living room full of exercise equipment.
  • Sets up several Zoom and FaceTime happy hours, it’s just like the real thing!
  • “I can finally put a dent in my long list of Netflix and Hulu shows to watch.

Dating in the Time of Corona

Since the lockdown started, my Instagram has become a showcase of couples in confinement. Every time I tap the pink and orange Insta-icon, I am greeted by a flood of couples bonding over baking bread, puzzling through an enormous jigsaw, or even announcing they have tied the knot at the courthouse in the wake of a cancelled wedding. Times may be tough, they say, but together, they will get through this.

Great. But what about the rest of us? Us bold singles who entered into the crisis alone?

Despite my excellent, alluring profile in last month’s Stern Singles, I myself remain unattached.…

Dear Deirdre – Thank You for Being Awesome

Our Letters to the Editor – By Oppy Staff

During the lockdown, it can be easy to lose touch with the day to day dealings of our friends. Everyone we know is stuck in Zoom classes at their parent’s house, right? Either that or working from home around the country. But this is not entirely true. There are some among us at Stern who are true heroes; not only are they continuing to go to work keeping us healthy and alive, but are taking on extra hours and additional jobs to fight the pandemic.

In fact, the Oppy staff is proud to highlight that our very own Editor-in-Chief, Deirdre Keane, is not just our fearless leader but one of these fearless healthcare workers.…

The Graduate: Joan Bloom

The Oppy is commemorating the last decade of NYU Stern with our new ‘The Graduate’ series. Each month, we’ll interview notable alum from each decade since the 1960s through the 2010s that have made an impact on their community and industry.

The Graduate, 1960s Edition: Joan Bloom

This month’s ‘The Graduate’ interview is with Joan Bloom, former PR director in the lifestyle and travel space. She graduated from the MBA program at NYU’s Graduate School of Business in 1966 (before it was named the Leonard N. Stern School of Business in 1988), and answered my questions via email and over the phone. …

Reflecting on the SHA Alumni Career Insights Panel

By Prashant Kota

Last week, the Stern Healthcare Association (SHA) hosted an alumni career insights panel to guide those MBA students interested in careers in the healthcare industry amidst the rapidly changing healthcare landscape. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to moderate the panel, and we were lucky enough to hear from healthcare industry leaders such as Tim Nolan from EmblemHealth, Pooja Chatterjee from Abbott, and Josh Kurtzig from United Family Healthcare.

Tim, a health insurance expert with over 30 years of experience in healthcare, leads EmblemHealth’s efforts in revenue growth and clinical and provider network as EmblemHealth’s Executive Vice President.…

From the Editor: May 2020

Has it been a month already? Honestly, I cannot decide if April was the longest or shortest 30 days of my life. I do know time has started to blend together. I only differentiate days of the week by which hospital I’m working in, do I have class or not, and how many days of scrubs do I have left?

Yet, we have all gotten into a routine of sorts – whether it’s working from home, classes from home…nearly everything, from home. We are dispersed all over the city, U.S., and world. These have been some tough times for our Stern family in terms of layoffs, internships and jobs rescinded or delayed, and disruptions in student visa statuses – just to name a few.…

Donald Trump is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known

In one scene of the 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate, Frank Sinatra’s character Bennett Marco tells the U.S. Secretary of Defense, “Mister Secretary, I’m kind of new at this job, but I don’t think it’s good public relations to speak that way to a U.S. Senator, even if he is an idiot.”

We often err on the side of politically palatable as opposed to morally expedient. In recent weeks, I’ve pondered this as I’ve tried best to articulate my feelings on the current administration and its response to the greatest public health crisis to hit the United States in a century.…
