What I learned from my terrible, no-good summer internship

May has finally arrived. Classes are done, Follies has wrapped, and the MBA2s are ready to graduate. And that means the MBA1s are preparing for their summer internships. Despite the strange and/or virtual setup most of you will have, I am certain that the majority of you will have interesting, challenging, and memorable experiences. You will work hard, learn, and grow and come back from your summer with a clearer vision of your future path. You’ll build friendships even stronger than those you have built at Stern. It will be an amazing experience.

Unfortunately, for some of you, the experience will not be so great.…

Farewell

After two years at Stern and four semesters writing for The Oppy, this will be my last issue. My first article in The Oppy was an in-depth look at the political bent of the student body on the eve of the 2018 midterm election. This was followed up by an overview of the Vietnam spring break trek for The Oppy’s final paper edition.

The next thing I knew, the entire editorial staff of The Oppy had stepped down (Langone summer graduation) and I was annointed Editor-in-Chief. This was a shock – I had fully anticipated writing for the newspaper, but I had not planned on leading it, let alone re-establishing the entire staff.…

The Biden Veepstakes: Let’s get premature!

With the United States stuck in a holding pattern, I would say you might have forgotten we’re just six months away from the “Most Important Election of our Lifetimes” since we had the 2018 Midterm “Most Important Election of our Lifetimes,” but let’s be real. You’re stuck in your home all day with nothing to do but binge the latest Netflix miniseries and watch the news.

You definitely didn’t forget we’re just six months away from the 2020 U.S. Presidential “Most Important Election of our Lifetimes.”

Unless you’re as focused on your day job as, say, Alabama coach Nick Saban, you’ve known since November 9, 2016 that we would do the whole thing again in November 2020.…

Incoming SGov Presidents: New Year, New Challenges, and New Opportunities

By Antonella Tellez and Ashwin Chandra

Remember early March? It feels like it’s been about ten years since then. The days were unseasonably warm and we were full of excitement for spring break travel and on-campus events ahead. Needless to say, our spring semester hasn’t gone as planned. We’re now spread across the world and we see each other in little rectangles on our laptops. But while virtual school will never replace the real thing, it’s been amazing to see how the Stern community has pulled together. We’ve helped each other navigate recruiting, brought in exciting speakers, and even maintained a full virtual social calendar.…

Stern Singles Presents: Ben Tantanella

Summer is right around the corner and it is getting hot in the latest addition of Stern Singles.

Our newest featured bachelor, our Mr. May, is none other than Ben Tantanella.

Sternie Testimonials:

“Ben helped me buy lingerie for my partner. If there is a lovely lady out there interested in Ben, she should know that underwear is part of the deal.”

We’ll touch more on this momentarily, but wow, great way to break the ice.

“This handsome boy is a gentleman on the streets and a freak in the sheets. By sheets I mean balance sheets…yes, Ben will help you with your accounting homework.”

Stern Somebody Presents: Raymond Liang

It is my utmost pleasure to present to you Raymond Liang, who is our feature for this month’s “Stern Somebody.”

Ray is a first-generation Taiwanese-American who was born in Queens, but has spent most of his life on Long Island. He is already a very accomplished young man, having earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s, prior to starting the full-time program at Stern in 2018. Before Stern he worked in Real Estate Valuation at a commercial bank. He is graduating this May and isn’t even 30 yet. To make matters worse, I mean, better, he is starting law school this fall with a plan to focus on entertainment law.…

Stern Singles Presents: Shelby Duncan

Hello Sternies, it is such a pleasure to share with you May’s most eligible bachelorette, Shelby Duncan.

Sternie Testimonials:

“Shelby has the mind and maturity of a 40 year old Nobel Peace Prize winner but the body of a 20 year old instamodel. Seriously. She. Does. Not. Age.”

I need to meditate on that for a minute.

“She makes a kick ass pomme aligot (Google it and get your Lactate ready)”

Why did that turn me on? Seriously, thanks for the new therapy content.

State your name and the best 1-2 sentence summary about you and your aspirations:

What’s cookin’ good lookin’ – Shelby Duncan here, writing you from the best coast in isolation.

MBA Blind Love

In March, an MBA edition of Love Is Blind, called MBA Blind Love, began among students of some of the top business schools in the U.S. These schools included Stern, Columbia, Wharton, Yale, Kellogg, Booth, Sloan, HBS, Stanford, and Yale…just to name a few.

Two single Oppy Board members decided to partake – for journalistic research purposes, of course – and then had the pleasure of interviewing the founder, Anna Li.

So how exactly is it done? B-school students from across the U.S. can sign up on the MBA Blind Love website with their school emails. Then you have to create an anonymous email so that you can receive and begin corresponding with your matches without disclosing your identity.…

Faculty Insights: COVID-19 and NYC

By JP Eggers, Vice Dean of MBA and Graduate Programs

The COVID-19 virus has rapidly impacted society on a global level in ways few of us could have imagined only 6 months ago.  While the fight to stem the incidence and impact of the coronavirus takes place, the fiscal and economic shocks caused by this fight and its after-effects are only beginning to be understood. In 2008, when the global financial crisis shook the business and public sectors, NYU Stern built on its expertise in financial markets, global economics, and policy in a cross-department effort to make sense of the flaws in the market structure that led to the crisis.…
