The Graduate: Meika Hollender

The Oppy is reconnecting with some prominent NYU Stern alumni with our ‘Graduate’ series. Each month, we’ll interview notable alumni that have made an impact on their community and industry.

This month, The Oppy is featuring Meika Hollender (‘13), entrepreneur, author and activist who built the first sexual wellness brand focused on women and sustainability, Sustain. Grove Collaborative acquired Sustain in August 2019, and Meika took on the role of VP of Communications at Grove. Meika and I sat down, virtually, to talk about her journey building and growing Sustain and the opportunities that followed after.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Stern Singles Presents: Caitlin Wolfe

Meet Caitlin Wolfe, MBA student and TikTok personality. When I asked Caitlin to describe herself, she said, “I tend to be the loudest person in a room and the last person to leave a party. Part diva, part tomboy. COVID lockdowns kicked off my quarter life crisis so here I am getting my MBA! East Coaster, turned Midwesterner, turned back to an East Coaster.” It may be the best elevator pitch I’ve ever heard.

Sternie Testimonials:

“Caitlin is the life of any party she walks into, by bringing up the energy level and always finding a way to have the best time with both friends and strangers.”

It is October, meaning we are in the thick of the fall semester, and in the onset of cuffing season. What’s that? It’s time for another Stern Singles feature? You read that right. This month we have Nathan Silverglate, who was nominated by his classmates. If you’re adventurous and looking for a partner who will take amazing photos of you with his photography skills, keep on reading.

“The perfect girl for Nate would be a noblewoman of Rohan who considers herself to be her own shieldmaiden, slayer of Nazgul. Or, simply an adventurous lady with a sense of humor.

Stern Faculty Spotlight: Claudia Perlich

“As you’re approaching your career, don’t spend too much time planning because life happens in unexpected ways. Maybe you have figured this out already, but I think the skill is to create opportunities. When I say create opportunities it does not mean strategically looking to advance in a career but to do good work for a lot of people. They will remember you, and it will be useful.”

This month’s Stern Faculty Spotlight features Claudia Perlich, data scientist at Two Sigma and adjunct professor at Stern who teaches Data Science for Business (Managerial). Claudia started her career in Data Science at the IBM T.J.…

Oppy Royalty

We are proud to feature our very own Stacy Chen and Nate Hoey, as The Oppy’s Prom Queen and King. Keep your eyes peeled for these cuties on Thursday.

Up first is our VP of Relations, Stacy Chen.

Stacy is an MBA2 student and has had an extensive career working in media at ABC and NBC before coming to Stern. However, we would argue that her work at The Oppy has been the most formative for her, professionally and personally. Right, Stace? Joking aside, Stacy is a force to be reckoned with. Not only did she create the B-School Newspaper Coalition with the most prestigious MBA programs in the U.S.,…

Stern Somebody Presents: Henry Mumford

The Oppy staff is proud to continue a feature called “Stern Somebody,” telling the stories of remarkable classmates and how they became the exceptional people they are today.

Henry Mumford is an MBA2 at NYU Stern. He graduated from Harvard in 2013 with a degree in economics and a solid education in lacrosse and a cappella. Prior to coming to Stern, he worked in finance and media. He now lives on Long Island with his wife and dog. He interned at BCG over the summer and will be going back full time after graduation.

I knew the name “Henry Mumford” long before I ever met him.

Stern Faculty Spotlight: Julian Yeo

“To me, balancing flavors is like if there’s a lot of spice, a little sugar is going to allow you to create more depth. If something is very fatty, or buttery, you need to round it out with acid. So I always think about debit and credit–now I have four different things I’m trying to balance.”

This month’s Stern Faculty Spotlight features Professor Julian Yeo, Clinical Associate Professor of Accounting at Stern. His research focuses on how accounting numbers are mapped into equity valuation.

Prior to Stern, Professor Yeo was a full-time faculty member at Columbia Business School and the University of Melbourne, and was a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Stern Distinguished Teaching Award.…
