Stern’s Favorite Band, Per My Last Email, Rocks Again in Sold Out Farewell Show

Per My Last Email concert at Drom, April 22nd, 2022. From left to right: Hondo Katz (guitar), Brendan Grambow (guitar/vocals), Andy Yang (lead vocals), Daniel Paul (keyboard), Drew Schmitz (drums), Fernando Schiantarelli (drums), Max Colbert (guitar), Sebastian Beltrame (bass)

For many of us, a rock band, especially one that favors tunes from Lizzo, Fountains of Wayne and Harry Styles alike, was one of the most unexpected things to have come out of the MBA program. What first seemed like an odd, amusing hobby became a favorite Stern ensemble that ended their official run with two sold out shows. Not only was their music the foundation of their unlikely friendships, but it also brought us together as a community, where we made some of our best memories at Stern, and for that, we are grateful.…

Stern Follies: A Backstage View

By Penny Burgess

At 7:20pm on Friday, May 6th, I was standing backstage right (when you’re facing the stage, that’s the front left corner, for all you non-theater kids!) at the Skirball Theater. Stern Superlatives were running on the screen on loop, awarding Sternies with titles like “Most Likely to Have a 20 Year Plan” and “Most Likely to Buy Shots for Everyone After the Show.” I was standing right on the edge of backstage, so I couldn’t see the audience, but I could hear the laughs and cheers as the seats filled.

At one point, Alexa Mauro, co-President of Stern Follies, came to join me, and I mentioned how excited I was to hear laughs for something that I had created.…

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS – PASSING THE TORCH AT THE STERN OPPORTUNITY

Dear Sternies,

First, we want to acknowledge the incredible run our current editor-in-chief, Deirdre Keane, has had heading the resurrection and successful resurgence of The Oppy over the last two years. We don’t know many people who can save lives at their day job, attend night classes, run a bunch of marathons, and restart a newspaper from scratch all at the same time, especially during a pandemic. Do you? Thanks Deirdre for all you’ve done for The Oppy. We didn’t quite know how to continue without you, so we realized we needed two editors-in-chief to run this thing after you’re gone.…

MBA Advice from a Langone Student

After spending a whopping four whole years as a Langone student – from pre-pandemic, to the peak of Covid, to this new world we live in – I feel I’ve learned a lot in how to optimize the MBA experience as a part-time student. From making friends, to selecting classes, joining clubs, networking, and having fun, it is A LOT with a full-time job. However, you did not come to Stern so you could attend two evening classes a week for a few years and take nothing more from the experience. It’s also the people you’ll meet and the experience you get outside of the classroom that will leave you satisfied with your time here.…

Meet the New SGov Co-Presidents – Meet CoJo

The photo you see above was part of a poster that Joline’s roommates designed for us as part of our election campaign.  It never launched in the end, so we thought it would be fun to share it in this edition.

The title was supposed to be “EQing Away – Our superpowers are listening, bringing people together, and driving change.”

Obviously, our intention was to make the whole campaign fun while expressing our key ideas, messages, and values. Both of us were very involved with creating bonding opportunities for and with our classmates from the start. From the Hamptons trip to Monarch to virtual happy hours to paintball, we had so much fun bringing people together!…

Why does the Langone Student Government (LSG) matter?

It has been ~800 days since the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered the Langone MBA experience for thousands of students. Throughout that time and despite tight restrictions on extracurricular activities, previous boards did a tremendous job rolling up their sleeves and coming up with creative ways to keep our Langone Student Government (LSG) operational.

We view this upcoming year as an important opportunity to restore the traditions of the Langone community so we’ve began our presidency by asking ourselves how much students even know about LSG.

All-in. That is Langone Student Government’s motto this year. A huge part of our challenge this year is to raise awareness about the value LSG adds to the Langone student experience.…

How do you Recruit On-Campus When You Aren’t Allowed On-Campus?

By Scott Cairns

I know the experience NYU WANTS for you when they advertise “On-Campus” Recruiting: Company sponsored coffee chats, networking events at the Wasserman Center, and little bowls of Lifesavers on every available surface (a surely sizeable budget line item that was likely easily cut during the COVID-times). In fact, my first job out of undergraduate as a member of the NYU CAS Class of 2015 was a result of exactly this experience. Knowing I wanted just such a career pivot and that NYU had the infrastructure to make it happen was a small…ok, I concede a very large part of why I chose to return to Stern nearly five years later in the Spring of 2020.…

Behind the Scenes: Passport Day 2022

The Stern International Committee’s premier event – Passport Day was held on April 14, 2022, after a pandemic-induced break of three years. The Passport Day is a celebration of the cultural diversity in our class with students and this year was no different! Featuring biryani and samosas from India and Pakistan, empanadas from Colombia, crêpes from France among many, MANY other delicacies from more than 25 countries, fabulous dance, song and comedic performances and attended by over 450 people, it was one of the biggest Stern events of the semester.

This year, the event was organized by the International Committee comprised of Jeetendra Khilnani, Anurup Gaurab, Joline Huntemann, Mike Wang, Nihar Patel, Leon Kee Pay and Jonas Putsch.…

A Day to Remember: The 2022 Boston Marathon

Three weeks ago, I ran the 126th Boston Marathon on Marathon Monday, or what is also known as Patriots’ Day. The iconic marathon had been on my list for a while as I am trying to complete all six World Major Marathons. It also has special meaning in my family since most of my mom’s side of the family went to school in Boston. When I saw an application in December to run as part of a charity team, I jumped on the opportunity. I knew that Easter weekend would be a weekend to remember.

I raised money for Girls on the Run Greater Boston, a nonprofit that designs programming that strengthens third- to eighth grade girls’ social, emotional, behavioral, and overall life skills through the sport of running.…
