Stern Singles Presents: Nathan Silverglate5 min read

It is October, meaning we are in the thick of the fall semester, and in the onset of cuffing season. What’s that? It’s time for another Stern Singles feature? You read that right. This month we have Nathan Silverglate, who was nominated by his classmates. If you’re adventurous and looking for a partner who will take amazing photos of you with his photography skills, keep on reading.

Sternie Testimonials:

“The perfect girl for Nate would be a noblewoman of Rohan who considers herself to be her own shieldmaiden, slayer of Nazgul. Or, simply an adventurous lady with a sense of humor. Either works. Nate will keep you laughing and will make an excellent companion on any LOTR trivia date.”

First things first, tell the masses, who IS Nathan Silverglate?

I’m in the 1-year tech MBA program and started this May 2021. I grew up in Santa Cruz California, and then went to UC Santa Barbara, so you know I like to have a good time. I’ve done all kinds of things with my life…I’ve been an outdoor wilderness guide, an outdoors/travel photographer, and I nearly went to med school before coming to Stern.

Med school? Say more.

I majored in biopsychology and actually used my MCAT score to apply to Stern, if you can believe it.

Why did you decide to go to business school over medical school?

You have to really want to become a doctor to go through med school, and I just didn’t want that lifestyle. I actually even got into med school but decided to apply to business school instead. They just started accepting the MCAT as a test score, so I used that to apply. Anyway, I wanted to go to business school, in particular the tech program, because you can be so much more creative in where your career goes.

And why the tech MBA program in particular?

To be a business leader, you have to be well-versed in tech. And it was only one year and it was cheaper than the other options! I worked in healthcare tech for a while, I was the director of operations for an endocrinology practice as well as an online health education company. I’ve also been frustrated by the digital tech in medical offices back when I was a medical scribe thinking I’d go to medical school — the future is tech, so I wanted to specialize in that during my MBA.

Let’s learn more about you outside of business school. You mentioned you’re a photographer. Tell us more about that.

I shoot digital photography, mostly of outdoor/wilderness and travel. I have a website for my photography, too if you want to check it out.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Man, pretty much everything. I played the saxophone in high school in a jazz band. I like 60s classic rock, jazz, everything.

What characteristics are you looking for in a lady?

Someone who is smart, doesn’t take life super seriously and goes with the flow, a bit spontaneous. Mostly I’d like someone who’s adventurous and open to trying new things, has real interests and passions. Someone who’s not a dick. (Can I say that?)

Yes, you can say that. Any special hidden talents?

I can do the wave with my eyebrows.

*He proceeds to wiggle eyebrows on Zoom in demonstration*

If anyone could play you in a movie or you could be a character in a movie, who would it be?

Probably Gimli from Lord of the Rings. We’re both short and hairy and I could fight with an axe, so…

Life mantra?

Everything in moderation, especially moderation.

Scariest thing you’ve ever done?

Putting my love life in the hands of The Oppy…

Who do you look up to most?

My parents and also that piano guy in Washington Square Park.

Any pets?

None of my own, but I love my family dog, Tony, he likes socks.

What’s the thing that surprised you most about Stern?

Honestly, I was surprised by how wifed up everyone is!

Don’t worry, there are still a handful of extremely eligible single people. Get on the waitlist to be featured on Stern Singles, folks.

Favorite cuisine or cuisine you’ve recently discovered?

I love sushi, and I recently tried this great Uzbek restaurant on the west side called Farida.

Uzbek food is absolutely wonderful. How about an ideal first date?

Strolling through IKEA. Citi biking to sushi. Playing mini golf. A little adventure and conversation.

Favorite movie(s)?

Lord of the Rings and The Big Lebowski.

Wow, a 3rd mention of LOTR. Fellow fans step up…

Alright, we think we’ve gotten a good holistic overview. Any last words?

The dude abides.
