WHM 2018 Student spotlight: Stacy Moore3 min read

Stacy Moore
NYU Stern, Class of 2019
Co-Founder, Stern Mothers

Can you tell us a little bit about the path that lead you to Stern (and your aspirations after graduating)?

I would say I’m more of a non-traditional MBA student, starting in my mid-30’s compared to most who start in their mid-to-late 20’s. After gaining many years of experience in PR and B2B marketing, I knew that I wanted to move into a leadership role, eventually C-suite executive role. I felt that an MBA would provide additional tools and strengthen my business expertise and present a pathway to break through the glass ceiling. Originally, I considered both full-time and part-time programs (Stern, Goizeta, McDonough, Rutgers), but determined that NYU’s part-time Langone program at Stern best met my needs at this stage of my career. Stern has a great core curriculum and offered the flexible schedule and concentrations I was looking for. And you can’t beat the location! After graduation, I plan to move into a corporate strategy role, and in the long-term pursue entrepreneurship.

Can you tell us a bit more about your experience of being a mother at Stern?  And about the community of mothers that you have been a part of and helped to build?

Being a mom, raising a family is already comparable to a daily Olympics. Completing an amazing amount of feats with limited time, and, at times, resources. So, adding work and a competitive business program into the mix, makes it feel like a triathlon, as you can imagine. I was nervous about being able to balance everything, but I’m always amazed at how much I’ve been able to stretch myself and integrate my support system to help along the way.

Tierney Morgan (Langone, class of 2018), a mother of two, and I started Stern Mothers in partnership with the Stern Partners club, after meeting more and more mothers at Stern who wanted to connect and share information, tips, etc. Through Stern Partners, we could also offer family and parent-focused programming and social events to add to students’ social experience at Stern. With a family, it can be tough to get out to all of the Stern events, so we try to consider simple things like having programs where Stern mothers can bring their child, or hosting an event at a time mothers could mostly likely accommodate. Personally, connecting with other moms at Stern has helped to inspire me and keeps me going (especially at my 9:00 am Saturday class on the coldest day of the season!) We hope that the Stern community of mothers can continue to build solidarity that would encourage their success overall.

What do you wish more people understood about being a mother while having a career and completing your MBA?

That it doesn’t have to be one or the other. It’s possible. As articulated through our school’s tagline, An Education in Possible, every challenge comes with an opportunity that has the potential to be realized. And I think these mothers embody that every day.
