When did Tide get so meta? Super Bowl ads turn self-referential

The hopes of many a party host and advertising enthusiast hung in the balance on February 4, as audiences preparing to tune in to Super Bowl LII hoped desperately for ad redemption in this year’s commercial breaks. After many 2017 spots featured tentative brand positioning related to touchy political and cultural themes, it was difficult to see if advertisers could recover during the 2018 broadcast-either through more of the same political tone, or through a total redirect. In an effort to avoid wading in the murky waters of contemporary discourse, advertisers instead stayed put in the shallows, leaning heavily on the motifs of the most well-known, successful throwback content from decades of football’s biggest night.…

MBA students announce cross-program professional networking database

On January 31, the Stern and Langone student governments (SGOV and LSG, respectively) announced to MBA club presidents the roll-out of a new, comprehensive networking resource available to all Stern graduate students.

The online resource, referred to as the Stern-wide Professional Networking Database, was first introduced to entering full-time MBA students at Fall 2017 LAUNCH as part of orientation programming. The database, which collects information about a student’s program at Stern, their expected graduation date, and roles in past and present industries, also collects and publishes preferred contact information so that peers can reach out to each other directly.

Since the database’s introduction, over 300 students have entered their information in an attempt to make the most of networking opportunities across graduate business programs at Stern.…

Full-time, Langone MBA students share personal stories through Stern Speaks series

The Oppy caught up with Francois Anderson, who co-leads the full-time series, and Dalia Shteinhauz, co-founder of the new Langone program, to find out more about what’s ahead this semester.

Abby Horowitz: All the details! What is Stern Speaks? When did it get started?

A lens on navigating challenging markets: DBi Asia 2018

In the first week of the new year, Stern students braved the storms and unprecedented crowds of people at JFK to make their way across the globe for the January 2018 DBi Asia program. After what felt, to many, like weeks spent at various airports, all 38 students and our fearless administrator made it to Singapore for two weeks of lectures, corporate visits, cultural exploration and some much-needed sun and heat!

Through a partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS), students attended lectures on subjects like the future of the Chinese economy, navigating challenging markets such as Indonesia, and negotiating across cultures.…

Molweni from Cape Town: DBi South Africa 2018

Throughout our time in South Africa, students on DBi Cape Town were often greeted with a friendly Molweni—or ‘welcome’—in Xhosa, one Cape Town’s many languages. This greeting was commonly heard in Cape Town’s townships—segregated urban areas on the periphery of the city where many were displaced during apartheid. During our two weeks of learning with the University of Cape Town, Stern students spent considerable time in the townships and learning about life and business in the diverse areas of Cape Town.

The commonly considered landscape of Cape Town includes the waterfront, the easily identifiable 2010 World Cup stadium, and the beautiful nature of Table Mountain and its surrounding national park.…

From New York to Pura Vida: DBi Costa Rica 2018

In January, our group of 34 full-time and part-time MBA students traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, in search of learning a little more about doing business in (DBi) another country. Costa Rica is a world leader in sustainability and ecotourism, so our program focused on a trip to a coffee farm and processing plant and experiencing the La Paz Waterfalls and Animal Sanctuary in the cloud rainforest firsthand.

We studied at the INCAE Business School just north of San Jose and learned about world leading sustainability practices, app development surrounding sustainability in the Costa Rican government, and issues facing the current and future Costa Rican rice industry.…

Exploring economic complexity in China: DBi Hong Kong 2018

After a long fall semester and a snowstorm in New York, the thirty-five of us going to Hong Kong could not have been any happier.

For most of us, joining the DBi was a lifetime opportunity to witness and learn firsthand from the world-class faculty at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Our core focus during this two-week experience was the complexity of doing business in China for multinational corporations.

The partnership between Stern and HKUST over the years gave rise to potentially the most perfect DBi program yet. Our calendars filled pretty quickly with classes that tackled today’s challenges of entering and maintaining a growing position in China, with cultural events that allowed us to connect with the local community and with touristy activities enabling us to explore and discover magnificent Hong Kong.…
