The People Have Spoken

The People Have Spoken

Justus Hanna, EMBA

When asked where I am from, I always struggle for an answer that seems honest. This is an easy question and an easy answer for Mr. John Smith from Sioux City, Iowa, but not so easy for a man who has been constantly on the move ever since he could remember. Usually someone can derive a set of assumptions about a person based upon where that person ‘calls home’, but I do not fit into any mold that links certain preferences to a specific place; instead my preferences are based upon the many unique experiences I have had throughout my travels.…

Next Wave hits BAM

The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Yearly Festival of ‘New’

Elizabeth Cooke, Contributing Writer

Elizabeth CookeEach fall, The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) delights its audiences with the Next Wave Festival. Inaugurated in 1983, the annual Festival offers New York City arts-lovers an array of daring presentations from a wide range of art forms including music, dance, opera, theater, film, visual art, and more. As BAM’s Associate Producer Amy Cassello put it, “BAM does not deal in themes beyond the promise of the ‘new’ of Next Wave.”

Although over the past four years I’ve been to more Next Wave presentations than I can count, the performance I most recently attended—alongside a group of Sternies from the Arts & Culture Club—was definitely among the most memorable.…

Making Sense of it All

Making Sense of it All: America Changes Course

The Opportunity Senior Editorial Boardhope-poster-faded

Regardless of your politics, it is fair to say that all of us are still trying to fathom what has transpired in our country since the early morning hours of November 9th.  We at the Oppy have struggled with coming to terms with it.  From our campus in New York City, we feel it can be hard to understand what has occurred in the United States over the past decades—even more so since the end of the Great Recession.

The economic pain and anger that has pushed our country into uncharted political waters is entirely understandable.…

Inclusivity in and out of Stern

Inclusivity in the Post-Madmen Era

Michelle Liu, MBA Class of 2017

This is my second time involved in Stern’s Inclusive Leadership Day.  The first time I was a giddy MBA1, and this time I moderated discussions for the incoming class.  Stern is a diverse and welcoming environment where I often felt well-insulated from the gender and racial bias of the real world, but this year, and for the first time in a long time, I felt uncomfortable.  I have less of a problem when you say something sexist or racist to my face, because we can call it out for what it is and address it.…

The Bottom Line

The Bottom Line Behind the Bottom Line

Leanna Bornkamp, Vice President

If one thing has been certain this week, it is that most of us are still reeling from the results of last Tuesday’s election. Some of the promises offered to the American public have the nation divided; some are certain of better days to come, others are worried about potential damage to the foundation of our democracy.

There is, however, one conspicuous group that seems to be relishing particular promises of relaxed financial regulation: Wall Street analysts, traders, investors—former B-School students.

Reports of panicked bankers were abundant on Wednesday morning, as the markets reeled with confusion and, for some, fear that end-of-year bonuses were suddenly in danger.…

Nuts and Bolts

Nuts and Bolts: A Conversation with Professor Okun

Udayan Tripathi, MBA1 Class of 2017

I ventured cautiously up to the the legend’s office. I have known other MBAs to disappear in these twisty hallways. It is not for the faint of heart to dare levitate above the safety of the 6th floor of the Kauffmann Management Center. And I risked it all. To drink from the eternal fount of wisdom that flows above. For once you ascend to the heights of the professors’ offices, the 7th floor and above, you are entering a land of great glory, but also one fraught with the risk of hearing hard truths.…

Everybody Wants to Create Something ‘Big’. Realistically, Most of Us Won’t.

Dan O’Brien, MBA1 Managing Editor

You are a special flower. Probably.

As any admissions consultant worth his salt will tell you, NYU Stern is one of the best graduate business schools on the planet, possibly the entire solar system (although graduates issuing from Uranus are quite impressive these days). We’re all here for a reason. We come from teaching, banking, publishing, the military, and a hundred other roles. We’re smart, motivated people who are undoubtedly destined to occupy the global 1%, which, as Investopedia has it, means annual income above $32,400 (shoot for the stars I guess).…

Sundays are Still for the NFL

How the Road Looks (Mostly) Clear for the League, Despite Falling Ratings

Danny Breslauer, MBA Class of 2017

The National Football League has long held a monopoly on the back-end of the weekend, routinely drawing more than 20 million viewers per week to a high-profile, nationally-televised games. The increased viewing options haven’t had an effect on the number of people buying tickets to the biggest games from ticket sites like Ticket Club. As well as this, the NFL has managed to increase the interaction between them and their fans even more, through innovations such as NFL RedZone and the ever-increasing popularity of fantasy football.…

Print Journalism

Print Journalism: Requiescat in Pace, That’s All She Wrote

Charles Urwin, MBA Managing Editor

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal issued a memo announcing an all too modern change in the 127-year-old paper’s print strategy. Written by Editor in Chief Gerald Baker, the memo promised to “maintain and strengthen our core news coverage…but in a sharper, more concise, more coherent and more easily navigable form”. As many of the Journal’s rivals were quick to report, the move to a more consolidated format will involve staff cuts; the paper had previously offered voluntary severance to its newsroom employees in the hopes of minimizing involuntary layoffs.…
