Stern student Ryan Bedell discusses transition from believer to atheist in new memoir

Even in the era of Covid, business school can be such an insular or intimate experience that we sometimes forget our classmates lived whole lives before we met them. Of course, that’s no major revelation, and most of us are the logical sum of our experiences.

Some of us, however, have lived a life wholly different from the one we inhabit now. Langone student Ryan Bedell is one such person, having grown up a deeply devout Catholic before choosing to leave the Church as an adult. It is hardly rare for people to become less religious as they grow up, but Bedell experienced a profound transformation as he gradually realized the tenets and principles of his faith no longer resonated with him.…

Stern Somebody Presents: Henry Mumford

The Oppy staff is proud to continue a feature called “Stern Somebody,” telling the stories of remarkable classmates and how they became the exceptional people they are today.

Henry Mumford is an MBA2 at NYU Stern. He graduated from Harvard in 2013 with a degree in economics and a solid education in lacrosse and a cappella. Prior to coming to Stern, he worked in finance and media. He now lives on Long Island with his wife and dog. He interned at BCG over the summer and will be going back full time after graduation.

I knew the name “Henry Mumford” long before I ever met him.

Stern Faculty Spotlight: Julian Yeo

“To me, balancing flavors is like if there’s a lot of spice, a little sugar is going to allow you to create more depth. If something is very fatty, or buttery, you need to round it out with acid. So I always think about debit and credit–now I have four different things I’m trying to balance.”

This month’s Stern Faculty Spotlight features Professor Julian Yeo, Clinical Associate Professor of Accounting at Stern. His research focuses on how accounting numbers are mapped into equity valuation.

Prior to Stern, Professor Yeo was a full-time faculty member at Columbia Business School and the University of Melbourne, and was a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Stern Distinguished Teaching Award.…

Stern Singles Presents: Brian Fitzpatrick

Sternies, it is fall again, meaning STERN SINGLES is back. Did you miss us this summer? We hope you had a summer of Covid-safe love and fun. Kicking it off this school year is a 2nd year Langone student, Brian Fitzpatrick. I’ve known Brian since last fall, and when he approached me to be the first Stern Bachelor of 2021-2022, who was I to say no? If you like passeggiatas at sunset and cannolis, keep on reading.

Sternie Testimonials:

“When you first meet Brian, the friendship is instant. It’s obvious from the start that he is an all around great guy – fun, smart, considerate, and always down for any social event.

Stern Singles Presents: Sarah Gilson

The weather is turning crisp, but this batch of Stern Singles is hot, hot, HOT. Our first bachelorette of the academic season is MBA2, Sarah Gilson! Sarah is a ride or die friend, someone you can call in the middle of the night if you find yourself stranded or in trouble. Sarah prefers savory to sweet, and believes that champagne is acceptable at any time of the day. Her wardrobe is almost all black, no matter the season.

Sternie Testimonials:

“Even after a full remote year, Sarah was an enthusiastic orientation leader for MBA1s showcasing that she has a warm and sweet soul that loves to connect with people.”

The Next Step: Rob Murray & Stripe

‘The Next Step,’ is a monthly series that features recent graduates who’ve made exciting moves after Stern. We hope that their stories will inspire and excite you about what’s next.

This month, we are featuring Rob Murray (‘20), a former Stern Venture Fellow who found his post-graduation bliss driving growth at Stripe, a technology company that builds payments infrastructure for the internet. I sat down with Rob (virtually, of course) on a sunny September afternoon to talk about his passion for Fintech, his relentless curiosity and his advice for finding the ‘next big thing.’

Ok, we’ll start off with an easy question.

The Graduate: Mayoral candidate and Stern alum Art Chang takes on City Hall

The Oppy is reconnecting with some prominent NYU Stern alumni with our ‘Graduate’ series. Each month, we’ll interview notable alumni that have made an impact on their community and industry.

It’s generally considered poor form for a journalist to eat lunch during an interview. I’m not proud of violating that principle, but fortunately for me, the subject of this sitdown was 2021 New York Mayoral candidate Art Chang.

“Oh, you can go ahead and take ten minutes to eat if you want,” he said before noting that he, too, had his lunch waiting on the side.

For a man with years of experience in city development, tech startups, and New York’s municipal government, Chang (Stern MBA, 1998) is almost disarmingly lax in conversation.…

The EV revolution: can Biden take us the last mile?

By Nicolaus Schmandt

113 years after Henry Ford’s first Model T rolled off the assembly line in Michigan, combustion engines remain the dominant means of moving a vehicle. For technology to last more than a century is an impressive run. Compared to phones, computers, and personal electronics, multiple iterations of which are unrecognizable and unusably primitive today, cars have remained surprisingly consistent.

But, finally, the end seems to be coming with Ford planning to put its last gasoline engine in a car in 2034, after which all vehicles produced by Ford will be electric. That’s around the time several governments, including California and most of Europe, are saying they will ban the sale of gas vehicles.…

Getting our vax on

These past few months, we have seen the U.S. do a “boot and rally” on Covid. After doing a terrible job of early testing and surveillance, vaccine rollout has gone remarkably well. In the past three months, an average of two million vaccines have been administered a day. Our population is currently 35% fully vaccinated and 46% partially vaccinated as of May 12. However, we are now getting to the point where the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine supply is starting to surpass demand, thanks to the “vaccine hesitancy” phenomenon.

Hesitancy is firmest in Republican white communities in rural areas and is often clouded in misinformation.…

Get to know the face behind SternMBAMemes: Morgan Salvan

Tell us about yourself and what brought you to Stern?

I am a second year student in the full-time MBA program specializing in Strategy, Tech Management + Operations, and Leadership & Change Management. Prior to Stern, I worked in the communications industry for about 7 years, where I devised creative solutions for the marketing and branding needs of clients like Canon, Jameson, HBO, The Super Bowl, and The NY Yankees. I came to Stern with the goals of hitting the reset button on my career (I’ll be going into consulting after graduation), broadening my horizons, learning new skills, and meeting people from diverse backgrounds.  …
