The 2022 Cannes Film Festival Experience with Stern

In May of this year, 25 Stern MBA students, including myself, attended the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival as part of the “Craft and Commerce of Cinema” course in the stunning French Riviera. Professor Al Lieberman led the group along with Professor Paul Hardart, giving us a tour of the famous “Palais” and the festival grounds just moments after landing (what is jetlag?).

Many people think the festival is just for movie premieres, but it is actually a major hub for those in the film industry. The “Marché du Film” attracts buyers, financiers, producers, distributors, and creative talent from all over the world. …

DBi Germany Spring 2022: Racing into Our Hearts

As with all DBis, aspiring MBAs register for a course under the guise of learning about some niche topic specific to the country they will study in but, in reality, they are just looking for an excuse to travel and check out a spot they think will be fun… the Berlin DBi was no different. I’m pretty sure NYU didn’t even post the course curriculum before registration opened (don’t fact check me on this), so we all blindly selected the Berlin DBi with no idea what we were getting ourselves into aside from trying to have a fun time in Germany.…

DBi New Zealand January 2020: From the Classroom to the Vineyard

By Nicholas Martinez

Kia ora koutou katoa – Greetings and hello to you all! From January 5th through the 16th, 31 Stern students gathered in Auckland, New Zealand for the first ever DBi New Zealand. Through multiple site visits and guest lectures, the course provided an insightful view into the industries that represent the commanding heights of the country’s economy.

We first received a warm and welcoming greeting from the University of Otago’s Associate Dean, Dr. Lincoln Wood. After his introduction we began our class which explored the history of New Zealand and the emphasis placed on recognizing the Māoris, the country’s indigenous population.…

DBi South Africa January 2020: Economic Opportunity in Africa and What We Owe to Each Other

By Gage Kaefring

Stepping off the 16 hour flight from Newark to Cape Town, I was woefully ignorant of the situation that gripped South Africa. I had read (some) of the pre-reading assigned to us for the course and I knew of the oppressive apartheid regime that had controlled the country before the early 1990s, but I had no true concept of the ripple effects created by that regime and the real human toll on those still dealing with the aftermath. Of course, logically, I should have realized that a system so oppressive and long would take many generations to reverse but I had not, for whatever reason, really considered the implications.…

DBi Mexico January 2020: Fun and Learning South of the Border

By Scott Schreiber

The first thing I noticed when stepping off the plane to Mexico City in the beginning of January was the weather. Having traveled south from a frigid New York winter’s night, arriving in the sunny streets of Mexico was like stepping into summertime. Still wearing my winter coat and having just met up with one of my future classmates, we waited for an Uber to take us 15 kilometers into the heart of Mexico City, and into a week of nonstop adventure, learning, and fun!

The 16 students who signed up for DBi Mexico were truly stepping into the unknown.…

DBi Australia January 2020: Outside of the Classroom and into Outback

By Jessica Wong

This January, 39 Sternies visited “the land down under” to learn more about doing business in Australia via in-class sessions and experiential activities in and around Sydney. This 3-credit course was partnered with the business school at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), was led by local Professor Christopher Jackson, and supported by Lisa Barrett (UNSW) and Kristin Fast (NYU).

In this compressed two-week course, students visited local companies, such as Qantas Airways and Canva; learned about aboriginal culture and history; and tasted Australian dishes, ranging from kangaroo to crocodile. The Qantas Airways’ visit included an overview of the business and discussion about “Project Sunrise”, the company’s planned 19 hour direct flight from Sydney to New York that was trialed in late 2019.…

DBi Costa Rica January 2020: Sustainability & Culture Soaking in Central America

By Eric Bauer

In January, I had the privilege of joining 37 of my classmates on a trip to Costa Rica through Stern’s ‘Doing Business in’ (DBi) course. It was my first time to ever visit the country, and the curriculum, learnings, and fun that was had, made for a memorable trip.

The week started once I arrived at the InterContinental hotel in San Jose, where I was greeted by some of my closest friends and classmates. We relaxed during the first night over some drinks, caught up on how our holidays were, and rested before our early morning bus ride to INCAE Business School the next day.…

DBi Israel January 2020: Lectures, Cultural Visits, and Hummus

By Alyssa Wypychoski

It was Saturday night in Tel Aviv and forty Sternies crowded around the Renaissance hotel lobby bar for the Welcome Happy Hour. Some had just arrived straight from the airport, others spent the day wandering the city and beach; everyone excited for the upcoming two weeks in Israel. With an early start Sunday morning, the group hopped on the bus to meet our wonderful university hosts, Hila, Idit, and Inna, and driver, Avner.

Our first day at Tel Aviv University (TAU) included a program inauguration, an “Israel at a Glance” course with Professor Uriya Shavit, and an onsite museum tour; Museum of the Jewish People at Beit Hatfutsot.…

DBi Hong Kong 2020: Eating & Learning in High Density

By Anna Ward

Every city is known for something – New York is known for convenience, where you can access anything you want at any hour of the day. San Francisco and Los Angeles are known for their proximity to nature and incredible outdoor activities. Chicago is known for its architecture and waterfront. Hong Kong is usually known for its density. But with that density comes incredible proximity to nature, amazing convenience, world class offerings, and a breathtaking skyline surrounded by mountains and waterfront on all sides.

During the January DBi to Hong Kong, 26 students and I had the opportunity to take advantage of all that Hong Kong had to offer.…

DBI CHINA 2019: 3 CREDITS, GREAT CONTENT, AND EVEN BETTER FRIENDS

As I dragged my suitcase, which had somehow lost all its wheels on its journey from New York, through Beijing International Airport, I began to wonder what exactly had I signed up for. Being a “wing-it” type of gal, my preparation for coming to a country that had limited English and serious internet-browsing restrictions involved printing some Stern emails and a photo of the hotel. As I searched the airport for an ATM at 2am, I mentally berated myself for not converting any dollars into yuan prior to arriving. I had remembered after landing that the taxis only took cash. I got my yuan, handed the driver my photo of the Crowne Plaza, and prayed that I was headed to the right place.…
