THE STERN OPPORTUNITY

Stern Hobbies: Leaving yourself in stitches

The goal of most businesses, particularly one run by a business school student, is to make money. Langone student Cynthia Jung, however, has found another purpose.

“My selling platform is really not meant to sell,” she says. “It’s actually meant to get people to stop asking me to make them things for free constantly.”

Given the time and money Cynthia puts into knitting, it’s hard to argue. And make no mistake, Cynthia is a serious knitter, spending upwards of 30 hours on some of her projects. Her knitting-specific Instagram feed shows off the full range of her work, from beanies to bikinis, and even if profit isn’t the goal, she is still managing to get complete strangers for customers.…

Make Room

My inbox has been flooded with hordes of hollow buzzwords and claims of solidarity to form a vague “we.” Not to fight for, and stand with, our black brothers and sisters, but to strengthen the brand. To sell a product. Jarrett Lucas, Executive Director of the Stonewall Community Foundation, said it best: “Informed by doctrines of capitalism and white supremacy, [we] expect good leaders to set themselves aside, to offer an objective yet discernibly human voice when representing an organization.”

We claim to be empathizing. We claim to be “with the cause,” but so many of us are caught up in the petty nuances of protest that we fail to make space and let these voices be heard.…

Dear Oppy: May 2021

We are proud to continue our agony advice column, Dear Oppy: B-School Advice for the Everyday Sternie – “real questions, terrible advice.”

Dear Oppy,

I am about to graduate next week, and I’ve been seeing a fellow graduating MBA student on and off for the past couple years. I’m staying in NYC and he’s moving to the West Coast. I don’t know if I should continue to try and make it work or call it. Help!

Sincerely,

Hopeful

Dear Hopeful,

Our whole MBA experience has been online and Stern believes that has been just as valuable as in-person school, so just schedule a bi-weekly Zoom meeting, and you’ll be good to go.…

May ‘21 SternSounds Playlist

Sternies, we have made it to the end of perhaps the most unusual academic year. Many of you started school virtually, while others trudged on after the bewilderment of last spring. Either way, we hope you are safe and very well-adjusted to taking finals over Zoom in the comfort of your home.

This is the final SternSounds playlist of the academic year, having kicked off our monthly playlist this spring.…

Pristine

By Shelby Duncan

TW: Rape, Sexual Assault.

Pristine (written by: Shelby Duncan, 2009)

The air

in April

is as fragrant as French perfume

L’Air du Temps they call it—

the air of time

it smells of hope.

and dreams.

and good things.

But,

when you go inside

the air is both

stale

and

familiar.

Then it bursts

into flames.

Falls apart

like a Pristine rose.

Plucked from innocence

into metallic warfare.

It tastes like nickels.

The air runs

red.

Liquefies into blood.

On my legs.

The floor.

The wall.

On him.

Then I run outside.

The air is pure again.

It smells of innocence,

Which I will never mistake again for naivety.   …

Covid Journal: Pandemic Puppy

It’s been a hell of a year, or 14 months at this stage. I spent the first six months of the pandemic working almost every night in two different hospitals, and the second six months repressing emotions related to what I experienced during the first half. During that time, I started to work less and to fill my time more, I threw myself into school, clubs, running, and friendships. However, I still felt isolated living alone. Add in a series of unfortunate events, and the pandemic blues finally got me.

If you know anything about me, it’s that I am a very positive person.…

Stern Somebody Presents: Claire Park & Kidae Hong

The Oppy staff is proud to continue a new feature for the paper called “Stern Somebody,” telling the stories of remarkable classmates and how they became the exceptional people they are today.

In our final issue of The Oppy for this academic year, we bring you not one but TWO “Stern Somebodies.” Claire Park and Kidae Hong are graduating MBA2 students.

Kidae Hong and Claire Park are originally from South Korea, where they have co-founded three companies together. Prior to Stern, they founded a crowdfunding platform for non-profit organizations, then a women’s apparel company and a live streaming social media app.…

Stern Singles Presents: JP Panier

The semester is cooling off and class is winding down… but Stern Singles is hotter than ever with May’s most eligible bachelor, JP Panier.

Jean-Phillipe is a new addition to the fold, forged in the fire of the quarantine business school experience. JP is also a part of the Executive MBA program, so he’s fancy. I can’t hold a candle to his own intro:

My name is JP Panier and I’m on a mission from God (insert Blues Brothers reference). I’m a huge lover of all things outdoors – running, biking, hiking, swimming, etc – and I’m looking to accelerate the transition to renewable everything.

Stern Singles Presents: Kathryn Whitney

Summer is here and we are capping off another year of Stern Singles. Our newest featured bachelorette is none other than Kathryn Whitney.

Sternie Testimonials:

In addition to being one of the funniest people I know, Kathryn is kind, smart and down for any adventure.

Those are all high qualities in an adventure companion.

Kathryn is the type of person you’d be happy to get stuck next to at a dinner party table.

Honestly at this point I’d just be happy to get stuck at a dinner party again. But I appreciate the notion.

Kathryn recently joined Stern to pivot into “marketing at a nonprofit, preferably one that helps give under-resourced kids access to higher education.”…

Stern Singles Presents: Erin Pettis

Welcome back to another addition of Stern Singles. We are excited to introduce you all to another Stern eligible bachelorette, Erin Pettis!

Sternie testimonials:

“From her infectious smile to her knowledge of the best restaurants in NYC, Erin is the person you can always count on for positivity and a fun time. She also has the cutest dog…so it’s a win-win!”

“Erin is the catch of all catches. Not only is she the most down to earth, chill puppy mom to have a sophisticated conversation with, she also whips up a mean mezcal cocktail.”

?If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my dog?…and…
