Stern Singles Presents: Kathleen Dillon

It is my pleasure to introduce you to this issue’s Bachelorette, my dear friend and sports enthusiast, Kathleen Dillon. Kathleen and I met in Impact Investing last semester, and she is hands-down one of the most positive and hard-working people I’ve met at Stern. Even though she’s busy being a Stern Chats host, an avid runner, and a stellar student, she still makes time to grab a beer and be a contributing writer for the Oppy.

Sternie testimonials:

Blond bombshell and dreamboat extraordinaire – thoughtful, delightful, and intelligent. I definitely would.

Hubba hubba!

Tell us about yourself, where are you from and what brought you to New York?

I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, went to college at Tulane University and then spent six years in the Coast Guard. I left the Coast Guard in 2017 and lived in Guatemala for four months before starting a job with the New York Mets running their Education Department. Mostly, I worked with Latin American players in the Mets’ minor league system, helping them learn English and adapt to life in the United States.

I loved being in the Coast Guard and working in sports, but I realized that I was missing the fundamental business skillset that I would need to reach the next steps of my career. Ultimately, I decided to pursue NYU’s full-time MBA program and have had an amazing experience here so far!

Primarily because you met me, right?

….. [Of course!]

That’s so interesting you worked for the Mets! What are your favorite pro sports teams?

The Boston Red Sox and the Brooklyn Cyclones

If you could pick any dream job what would it be? Would it be related to sports?

Collegiate Athletics Director or National Park Service Park Ranger

Since you’ve moved around so much, what is your favorite city that you’ve lived in besides NYC?

Philadelphia

Go birds! What’s your most memorable vacation?

Right before I started school at Stern, I went on a hiking trip to Italy with two of my cousins. We backpacked through the Dolomites for a week and then spent three days in Venice.

Are you involved in any campus groups or clubs?

Stern Chats podcast host, Admissions Ambassador, Military Veterans Club, Management Consulting Association

Favorite Stern class?

Data Driven Decision making with Professor Xiao Liu

Favorite NYC bar?

Dante NYC

Favorite band?

Pearl Jam

Did you take on any new hobbies during the pandemic?

I took a screenwriting class over the summer and have also done a lot of reading.  I highly recommend The Hot Hand by Ben Cohen and The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.

Any dating dealbreakers?

If we’re at a bar/restaurant and he treats the waitstaff badly or doesn’t tip.

What are some shows you watch that you would be excited to learn your date watched as well?

Last Chance U, Schitt’s Creek, The Office

What’s your ideal date and what’s your favorite date spot in NYC?

Pre-COVID: Any kind of sports game

Since COVID: Outdoor activity – run, go for a walk in Prospect Park, meet up for a coffee

Add some Baileys to that coffee first! Let’s get to the good stuff- childhood crush?

Tie between Tony Reali and Sean Patrick Thomas

I will never get over the fact that we both crushed on Tony Reali, you have good taste!

There you have it, folks! Kathleen Dillon, from Coast Guard Vet to the New York Mets. Also, soon-to-be screenwriter perhaps? If you’re interested in Tony Reali, reading, sports, coffee, outdoor activities or any combination of the above, give Kathleen a virtual shout!
