11/5-11/8: Celebrate our Veterans on Campus!

As a community, Sternies represent countries all over the globe, bringing lessons from every industry and associating ourselves with countless affinity groups. One of those affinity groups here on campus is the Military Veterans Club (MVC). During the week leading up to Veteran’s Day, MVC will put on a series of events for the student body. Fun and serious, events range from ‘Sweat with Vets’, an early morning physical training session in Washington Square Park, to ‘VetX’, where veterans will talk about some of the experiences in service that impacted them the most.

Overall, Veteran’s Week is an amazing opportunity for the Stern community to learn more about their classmates’ experience in the Armed Forces and their transition into civilian life. It’s also a great way for the MVC to give back to the Stern community that is so diverse and welcoming as well as for students to get to know a different and more serious side of their veteran classmates.

One of the highlights will be a keynote address from 4:30-6:00p on Monday, November 5th by Brigadier General Thomas Bouchard, the current Assistant Adjutant General of the Rhode Island National Guard. BG Bouchard is a former Special Forces Officer who was deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti, and is a recipient of numerous military awards and decorations including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Pathfinder Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Special Forces Tab, and the Ranger Tab. Currently, he also serves as the Director and Portfolio Manager for Deutsche Asset Management where he is responsible for the performance of investment portfolios consisting primarily of non-investment grade bonds and bank loans.

As an expert in leadership and organizational behavior, BG Bouchard will be speaking on how his own experiences as a Green Beret has impacted his philosophy and informed his business career. These lessons will provide Stern students additional tools and frameworks to use as they enter the workplace.

On Wednesday (11/7), Andrew Gilbert will be leading ‘Sweat with Vets’, a circuit-based workout in Washington Square park. Between running laps, participants will be doing push-ups, air squats, and jumping jacks. This event was a big hit last year and is a great way to start the day on a positive and energetic note.

If you’re a fan of Stern Speaks, ‘VetX’ is the perfect event for you. From 4:30-6:00p on Thursday November 8th, MVC’s Hisham Semaan and Mike White will be sharing stories from their time in service. Each veteran represent excellence in the military through different and unique ways, and have some great tales lined up.

Last but not least, MVC will have a dunk tank set up in Gould Plaza on November 8th. For $5, students can take three shots at dunking a veteran, professor, or Stern faculty member on a chilly November afternoon. Additionally, bidding will open for VIPs on Monday (stay tuned for some big names!).

No matter what your background, there’s something for you during Vets’ Week. It’s a perfect way to support MVC as well as observe one of the nation’s most important holidays.
