Choose Your Own CitiBike Adventure

The Stern Adventures Club Shares Some Tips on New York’s Favorite Bike

It’s been an action-packed year so far for Stern Adventures. We’ve hiked, climbed, jumped, crawled, skied, boarded, and more. 130 Sternies invaded Steamboat Springs, CO for our annual ski trip (up 100% from last year!), and we represented Stern well at the Tuck Winter Carnival, sporting unicorn onesies during the grueling downhill competition. We have lots more coming to help get you outside with your classmates before the semester’s end.

Now that spring is in the air, there are countless ways to get some air with your friends, or just by yourself – no Adventures required.…

Sternies Explore Investment Management

The Stern Investment Management and Research Club Reflects on the Semester

Credit remained a hot asset class for much of last year, and Stern’s 2nd Annual Credit Competition enjoyed significant buzz because of it. The competition, hosted in November 2016, saw participation from top business schools – all pitching credit investment ideas ranging from investment grade to high yield. Stern’s team was represented by Neville Commissariat (‘18), William Li (’18), Pramit Mukherjee (’18), and Shirley Tian (’18), who pitched a Buy recommendation for 14%/L+11.26% Surplus Notes of MBIA Insurance Corporation due in 2033. After two exciting rounds, teams from The Wharton School and Columbia Business School emerged as joint winners.…

The B-School Pipeline Problem

Women and the Uphill Battle to Reach the C-Suite

As of International Women’s Day 2017, only 21 Fortune 500 companies had female CEOs—down 12 percent from 2015’s numbers, as reported by the Independent. According to a report released on March 7 by the GMAC (the organization that designs and administers the GMAT exam), women make up 47 percent of individuals receiving graduate business degrees.

In a world where women are getting non-MBA business degrees (Master of Finance, Management, etc.) at the same rate as men, women are only receiving 36 percent of MBAs. Combine that with the fact that the number of CEOs in the Fortune 500 with MBAs has been steadily growing, and it becomes clear: we have a pipeline problem that could make it hard for women to make it into the c-suite.…

Office Hours: Friend or Faux?

Some Thoughts on How to Prepare for A Productive Conversation with Stern Professors

An hour before office hours, she rifles through her notes. She is searching for a topic on which she needs clarification so that she may use it as an excuse to attend. She considers two strategies: (1) ask about an equation thrown up on the board or (2) strike up a conversation on a challenging concept in order to demonstrate facility with the course content. It is one week into the semester and she knows her professor’s biography by heart. The professor has lived a professional life she can only dream of and hopes to begin building a relationship quickly.

Think Social, Drink Local Recap

Boozing for a Good Cause

Sponsored by Stern’s Social Enterprise Association and Luxury & Retail Club, the “I heart New York” runway show and party showcased local fashion designers, food and drink. Proceeds from the event support the Social Impact Internship Fund, a financial stipend that supports first-year, full-time MBA students who wish to complete a summer internship working at the intersection of business and society.

A Few Thoughts on SXSW 2017

Through a B-School Student Lens, It Almost Writes Itself

Each year, thousands of people gather in Austin for one of the year’s highlight events for techie and creative types alike–and there’s no shortage of business insight for a Sternie to find in the shuffle. Here are a few points I couldn’t ignore:

SXSW was more of a logistic nightmare than it usually is.

In case Twitter hasn’t already made this apparent through one meme too many, people were panicking in Austin when they opened their Uber and Lyft apps to get around for SXSW. Austin voted to increase regulation on background checks for Uber and Lyft drivers in May 2016.…

Freud: A Local Gem

Freud: A Local Gem

From Schnitz’wich to Cocktails, the Austrian–Viennese Experience in Greenwich Village

Jonathan Koo, AVP of Advertising and MBA Class of 2018

Freud, a quaint, understated restaurant, is located on La Guardia Place in the heart of Greenwich Village. Its cuisine, a contemporary take on Austrian-Viennese classics, includes authentic dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel and Octopus Gulasch. The chef boasts Michelin-starred credentials. On Sundays, they feature live jazz during brunch.

I popped in for a quick bite and a quiet space to study for my Global Economy midterm on a Tuesday evening during happy hour (seemed like the logical thing to do after hearing Scott Galloway rant about his AMEX Black Card for 3 hours straight).…

Stern Recovers #12 in U.S. News

NYU Stern Recovers its Strong Position in this Year’s MBA Rankings

Keith Riegert, Co-Editor-in-Chief

NYU Stern climbed eight positions in U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of top full-time MBA programs to #12—a giant uptick following last year’s reporting fiasco. The correction should be a big sigh of relief for the school, representing, more or less, a full recovery for Stern after a 2017’s rough whacking.

Other top schools on the list did not fair so well: Stanford, which last year had elbowed in just behind Harvard at #2, fell to #4 on account of low employment rates for graduating MBAs.…
