Softball Recap: Stern Beats Cornell

Stern Beats Back Cornell (15-8) to Win Second Game of the Season

In the second game of the 2016 softball season, Stern soundly beat Cornell 15-8 on a crisp, late April evening. An eight-run second inning, which included a three-run blast from Justin Maloney (’15), helped seal the victory. Cornell came back strong, pulling to within three runs after the fifth inning (11-8), but the Sternies rallied for four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game.

A Final Sign-Off

Headshot - Morgan WhiteThe Oppy is a love letter that Nick and I have compiled every two weeks for the last 9 months. Who are we writing to? To Stern, to MBAs at other schools, to prospective students, to alumni. To people who think the MBA can change the world. To people who think business is interesting. And to anyone else who is still reading. Yes, to you.

Sometimes we’re ghost writing (cough cough, issue one), but most of the time we’re building a perspective on life at NYU with the help of a team of talented managing editors and writers.…

Eataly’s Adam Saper and Mario Batali Visit Stern

Keith Riegert, Langone Managing Editor
Anne Gregory, MBA Class of 2017

In business, the best of times often come straight out of the worst of times. That’s the story behind the Flatiron District’s Eataly; in just six years, born in the wake of the Great Recession, the 23rd Street market has gone from a gamble at a precarious time to one of Manhattan’s most popular attractions.

On April 19th, sections of Stern Professor Russell Winer’s marketing class had the opportunity to hear just how Eataly ticks directly from CFO of Eataly USA, Adam Saper, and his business partner, and culinary star, Mario Batali.…

President of the Stern Real Estate Club

Twenty students from the Stern Real Estate Club (SREC) toured 4 World Trade Center (4 WTC) and the recently completed Westfield World Trade retail complex on March 24th. The group first visited 4 World Trade Center for a presentation by Silverstein Properties. Highlights included a detailed presentation from Silverstein, sweeping views of the city, and selfies from the terrace on the 57th floor.

It is amazing to see what is happening at the site: Silverstein is currently developing 3 World Trade Center and is in the process of finding an anchor tenant and securing financing for 2 World Trade Center.…

Recapping the 2016 MBA Media & Entertainment Conference

Stern hosted the 2016 MBA Media and Entertainment Conference at NYU’s Kimmel Center on Friday, April 8th. The conference was organized in collaboration with Columbia, Haas, Fuqua, Sloan and Wharton.

Events kicked off with a lively fireside chat between Disney/ABC president, Ben Sherwood, and ABC News anchor Cecilia Vega. The pair discussed the future of traditional television as more and more subscribers choose to “cut the chord” and what new mediums, such as virtual reality, have in store for the industry of entertainment.

Panels throughout the day ranged from roundtables on new media investments and entrepreneurship, virtual reality and the future of the music industry to native advertising, off-platform digital video and the experiences of former MBAs who now work in media and entertainment.…

Spring DBi’s Take Flight

Yalla to Morocco!

Laura Giles and Callinda Taylor, Contributing Reporters

DBi Morocco 2016 took students to Marrakesh and Casablanca, home of NYU’s partner university ESCA, the premier school of reference for management training in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Students were led by Professors Boukouray and Raddadi, who facilitated a fantastic week of business-related and cultural conversation. Group outings included a trip to the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh, distinctive for its cobalt-blue walls. In their free time, students furthered their cultural education by practicing their haggling, comparing tagine at restaurants across the city, and relaxing in the hammam.…

Tommy Kail Comes to Stern

Kristi Berry, MBA Class of 2016

With deepest apologies to the professors of our Monday morning classes, we had somewhere else to be that day.  You might say, we had to be in the room where it happens.

The day in question was March 28th, and the room an unassuming KMC classroom, where Dolly Chugh’s Managerial Skills class – and more than a few hangers-on – packed in to listen to Hamilton director Tommy Kail speak about leadership.  Some came to the session for advice from a seasoned leader, while others came to hear more about that musical your friends won’t stop talking about.…

Callie Taylor, MBA Class of 2016

On March 4, the Social Enterprise Association and the Luxury & Retail Club came together to organize Think Social, Drink Local: a fashion show featuring local designers and food vendors that raises funds to support the Social Impact Internship Fund (SIIF). SIIF provides a financial stipend of up to $10,000 to select first-year, full-time MBA students who wish to complete a summer internship working at the intersection of business and society, where they can use their business education to positively impact the broader world around them. SIIF recipients have worked with non-profit organizations, for-profit social enterprises, and started their own social ventures.…
