What am I thankful for?

I am thankful for a close-knit, insane, loving family. For a group of friends that I can go to the ends of the world with. For living in a city where anything and everything is possible. For a body that keeps somehow working after 12 surgeries, three concussions, and way too much Fireball and Monster to be anything but fatal.

I am thankful for a lot in my life.

Who moved my Paneer? An International Student’s Musings on New York

For the four of you who were desperately waiting for my column, I apologize for the delay. Last week all the Johns/Jons, Joshs, Mikes/Michaels, Charles, Gregs, Sarahs, Kellys, Lauras and Alexs decided to welcome me to US, New York style; which I assumed was treating me to pizza that hasn’t been stolen by a rat. Yet. But, they took me to a dark alley and beat me up.  Their gentle punches and kicks showed me the genuine appreciation they had for my column. Thanks guys, it’s nice to be in New York with you. But, the path of hard-hitting journalism is filled but with many obstacles, so I am back again with my piercing insights.

Friends, Countrymen, Political Animals: The ISIS Strategy

When ISIS began to take the center of the geopolitical stage in 2013 and 2014 by capturing the Iraqi cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, many doubted their staying power, reach, and ability to launch attacks against the West. In an interview with the New Yorker in January of 2014, President Obama said: “if a JV team puts on Lakers uniforms, that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant.” Six months later, ISIS captured Iraq’s 2nd largest city of 1.5 million people, Mosul. Its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, then declared that his organization had established a global caliphate of which he was the caliph.

What are you thankful for? Whether it’s an internship offer, surprise free pizza, a successful Tinder date, or finally being able to drink the wine at a networking event, there are many things at Stern we can all appreciate. Thanksgiving will be upon us soon, and for the uninitiated students at Stern experiencing it for the first time, Thanksgiving is an imperialist American holiday during which people eat a giant meal and watch football (not fútbol) with their family members, hopefully with plentiful libations. Each Thanksgiving, nearly 47 million people travel all over the U.S.

The Manhattan Project: Giving Thanks

I had never crossed the Atlantic before I moved to this city and I had been here for all of two months when I signed up to write for the Oppy. And if you’re wondering why the good people running the paper are letting me write a column on the history of New York City, your guess is as good as mine. So, it is only fitting that I give thanks to these trusting folk by writing about a parade that was started by immigrants (like me) to celebrate the city – and the country – that had become their home.

1907: James Casey founded United Parcel Service (UPS) in Seattle. Rudyard Kipling received the Nobel Prize in literature. Henry Ford had not yet revolutionized affordable automobile transportation with the Model T, which would release the following year. The British passenger liner RMS Lusitania made its maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York City – the sinking of the ship by a German U-boat in 1915 would prove instrumental in America’s decision to declare war on Germany. Legendary major league pitcher Walter Johnson debuted for the Washington Senators, securing the first of his 417 career wins.

Beer Blast: An ELCD Case Study from the Stern Literary Journal of Business

Perhaps Emily Levine, ‘16, said it best when she remarked, “Beer Blast is as much a gift as it is a state of mind.”¹  Ask around, and you’ll find that many of your classmates look forward to Thursday because it ends with Beer Blast. We love suffocating in a humid basement, slowly heating up over the course of four hours. We love sticky floors (walking should be more challenging). We feel special when the Beer Blast guys know our orders. We live for the surprise of what the hosting club will dream up – piñatas, balloons, and birthday cakes for Jay-Z have all made appearances in the past.

Thanksgiving Cocktails

It’s that time of the year when you meet all your relatives, eat great food and hear your drunk uncle talk about the lizard man running the government. Don’t you wish that you can drink some nice cocktails to supplement the great evening you are having so far (except for the lizard man shenanigans). Worry not! Here are some selected ones that we know you will enjoy!

Pumpkin Pie Martini

Pumpkin is the flavor of the season, so why not have a pumpkin cocktail?

½ oz. Stoli Vanilla

1 oz. Pumpkin Spice Liqueur (any brand will do)

½ oz.

4: US Holiday. 4th Thursday in November. Traditionally spent with loved ones eating food and watching football. Followed by “Black Friday”.

Whilst I’m not actually American I have been lucky enough to celebrate this holiday for the last five years. So for the Sternies whose only experience of Thanksgiving is Addams Family Values and the Brad Pitt episode in Friends, here is a handy guide about the holiday – from an international viewpoint.…

REI on Black Friday

Anne Gregory, MBA Class of 2017 and Keith Riegert, Langone Managing Editor

This year, the high-end outdoors retailer, REI (Recreation Equipment Inc.), is taking a novel approach to consumerism’s biggest holiday, Black Friday. REI is going dark. Instead of partaking in the deals day, REI, whose sales topped $2.2 billion in 2014, is giving Black Friday the cold shoulder with OptOutside-paying its 12,000 staff members to take the day off and enjoy the great outdoors. Numerous shoppers will be disappointed but they can still find great deals at GetYourCouponCodes and other online coupon stores. According to REI’s press release, President and CEO, Jerry Stritzke says, “Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the essential truth that life is richer, more connected and complete when you choose to spend it outside.…
