Psychology at Work: Depression

Ethan Underhill, MBA Class of 2016

Depression, in the medically-derived lexicon of psychology, has a more specific meaning than our everyday usage of the term. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the “bible” of psychological diagnosis, outlines the qualifying criteria of depression and attempts to separate instances of the disorder from the emotional downturns inherent to life, such as the grief experienced after the death of a loved one. No matter what age you are, dealing with depression can be difficult for anyone. But it is also important to remember that there is always a solution to this and it will get better.…

Entrepreneurial Alumni: Analogue

Jared Gordon and Jesse Wilson, MBA Class of 2005

When Jesse Wilson and Jared Gordon met at Stern’s Welcome Days in August of 2003, they had no idea where they would end up 11 years later. Frankly, they didn’t like each other very much. Jesse was from the San Francisco Bay Area, and Jared was from the East Side of Manhattan. There was, you might say, some cultural friction.

This friction dissipated, and a friendship grew, in large part over a shared love of good drinks. As Jesse completed his studies and pursued his career in financial planning and analysis, and Jared went into investment banking, they not only grew to be good friends, but frequently discussed their dissatisfaction with the corporate world.…

The Heroic Spirit of Business

Morgan White, MBA Class of 2016

“The heroic spirit of business”: A phrase borrowed from the book Conscious Capitalism by John Mackey and Raj Sisoda, I repeat it to myself throughout the day. It’s my mantra—a reminder of why I’m at Stern.

I hail from the nonprofit world. It’s an extremely diverse world with lots of niche interests. Mine was access to medicine. The right to healthcare is a human right, and, as some of the biggest entities in that world, pharmaceutical companies are in the position to make the biggest widespread impact. When and where I could, I bridged the gap between pharmaceutical companies and institutions providing medical services to populations that would not otherwise have them.…

Wine and New York: Learning the Ropes

Tara Hankinson, MBA Class of 2015

I moved to New York four and a half years ago and quickly realized that the city has its own set of rules. There is a system that allows us to live harmoniously with the other 8.5 million residents crammed into the most densely populated major city in the United States. Reflecting on being a “new” New Yorker, I realized that many of my credos for living in the city translate into wine buying philosophies.

Always have an idea of where you are going before you leave your apartment or walk into a wine store.

Rizzo Reviews: Macbeth

Courtney Rizzo, MBA Class of 2015

Excitement in the Rizzo Reviews world this week – it’s the first opera of the season! Call it “The Scottish Opera” if you are the superstitious type and are reading this aloud in a theater, but otherwise you can just call it Macbeth, Verdi’s take on Shakespeare’s classic. Coming from the bright midday sunlight into the Metropolitan Opera, an unsettling mood is achieved with slight movement in the moon projection on the curtain. After a spot-on overture, the curtain goes up to reveal a leafless forest with a concave top and a rounded floor that add something ritualistic to the spectral setting.…

Day in the Life of a Langone Student

Victoria Fabiano, Langone class of 2015

Marketing. There are so many different types of jobs that fall under “marketing.” My first role out of undergrad was the typical marketing role most people think of: brand management, found after a long time searching for Online Resources for Tennessee, New York, California, and several other locales to get an idea of what I was getting myself into. I spent over a year at Dannon working on Activia before I traded in yogurt for makeup at Estee Lauder Companies. The marketing that I did at Clinique is very similar to what I do at my current role at Bath & Body Works—new product development.…

From the Editor

You guys!

It’s almost October, and I’m only just feeling like my head is going to explode. Which is pretty remarkable, don’t you think? I’m fairly sure that last year, it took about one day (possibly only one hour) before I felt so inundated with Stern-ness that I was afraid I would walk away from LAUNCH with an accidental torch tattoo. So MBA1s, that’s what you have to look forward to for your next year: almost a full month of semi-relaxation (which is really just filling your day with 20 hours of activity instead of 23, but it’s all relative).

In the past month, I’ve also started to make the Oppy office in the leadership lounge start to feel like home.…

Recruiting Lessons from the Financial Crisis

Conor Grennan, NYU Stern Dean of Students

So, pretty busy, right? I know. Classes, clubs, going out (sorry – “community building”), exploring the city…it all adds up.

And here comes recruiting season.

To give you some perspective on how to get through it all, I wanted to share a few thoughts from my own first semester. For this, we harken back to September 2008, when we, the fresh-faced MBA1s, were preparing to start our recruiting season.

So much energy and enthusiasm! New York City! World at our feet!

And then the economy collapsed around us, like that Lego tower you were trying to build during LAUNCH.…

The Arts & Culture Club: Welcome

Lauren Pearl and Jeremy Wimmer, MBA Class of 2015

Y’know that friend you have? The one who always seems to be getting free concert tickets… That guy who knows the artist… Who somehow has Instagram pictures eating Joe’s Pizza with Kristen Wiig… The dude who always knows the secret password to cut the line at the club?*

Here’s the long and the short of it: We at the Stern Arts & Culture Club want to be that friend. And I know that at least half of you probably already have a friend like that (because you’re from New York City or Los Angeles and you already rule the world).…
