Food for Thought: Social Enterprises using Food for Good

Chelsea Colby, MBA Class of 2015

On May 5, Stern’s Social Enterprise Association, in partnership with Stern Eats, hosted an enlightening panel discussing four businesses that bridge social enterprise with the food industry. Representing Hot Bread Kitchen, Drive Change/Snow Day, Greyston Bakery, and Housing Works, the panelists shared their thoughts on what it takes to produce a social impact while remaining profitable and running a successful enterprise. Below, you’ll find our highlights from the conversation.

Reflections After One Year at Stern

Hansini Sharma, MBA Class of 2015

Krystal has left a legacy of speaking her mind and unapologetically sharing her thoughts on issues that affect our community every day. Too bad I am shy and not opinionated.

As we head into the second year of our #mbajourney, I promise to talk about the elephants in the room, share random pieces of information that are probably useless but good talking points in a bar, and above all, to hopefully make you smile. Basically, get ready for a big brain dump every two weeks. So without further ado, here we go with a few thoughts after making it through year 1.…

Notes By KW: Graduation

Krystal Walker, MBA Class of 2014

It is with great sadness that I write my last article for the Oppy. No, literally I am in the Leadership Lounge shedding tears while I currently bang out this article and Kiran Sachdeva has zero pity for my current display of emotions. Why the tears? While I’m super excited that Hansini Sharma will be taking over my column in the Oppy (get excited, she’s going to be amazing), making this transition is just another reminder that I graduate in a few weeks. Let me tell you I have struggled with being excited about the events happening at Radio City on May 22nd.…

Rizzo Reviews: An Artists’ Salon

Courtney Rizzo, MBA Class of 2015

Calla Videt and Laura Fox put on a New York City night of culture to remember. They were brainstorming about the idea of an artist salon that would present the art and performance scene to the business school crowd, and then they just made it happen. Not just made it happen, in fact, but made it into an overall happening.

The program for the salon, divided into two parts to allow for plenty of socializing, had a little bit of everything. There were singing and short films, readings of play excerpts, an art viewing of Lisbeth Kaufman’s brain (ask her about it sometime), and even a charming clowning act by Aya Tucker.…

Personalitini: Tales of Drinks and Dates / Raise Your Glass – Let’s Make a Toast

Liz Batsche, MBA Class of 2014

In order to begin the next chapter of my life, I need to conclude this current chapter. Never before have I been so excited to work. I realize this sounds completely insane. Who is excited about working? This girl! I’ve been planning my career switch into alcohol marketing for several years and I’m thrilled to get paid to do something I am genuinely passionate about. I do realize that there will be ups and downs with this new career, like any, though the ratio will be much more favorable than my five years in investment banking.…

Entrepreneur Spotlight: Seyrue

Crystal Ung, MBA Class of 2014

As a self-proclaimed feminist and fashion enthusiast, Crystal Ung came to NYU Stern with plans to start a venture centered on a mission to empower women and one at the intersection of fashion and technology. Having started an e-commerce business in 2009, Elevate Boutique, a marketplace for local, Los Angeles artisan-made jewelry and eco-friendly clothing and freelancing as wardrobe stylist while working for the Mouse (Disney), she knew entrepreneurship was her calling. What was particularly attractive to Crystal was the opportunity to use entrepreneurship as a vehicle to make a positive impact in the world and while at Stern, identified an avenue – through women’s workwear.…

Rust and Vines

Karibi Dagogo-Jack, MBA Class of 2014

KaribiSome genres rust. Decades later, they appear the same but are brittle with age. Country music, once a rich source of folk tales and unpretentious wisdom, has become nothing more than (bad) seventies rock. Or, worse yet, it’s become (bad) pop. Aside from a few practitioners (Jason Isbell!), modern country musician either strain under the weight of imitation or they disgrace their forebearers with twangy blather.

Other genres grow vines. These vibrant growths tangle outwards obscuring and thriving on their foundation. Rock is a great example of this. You’d be hard pressed to find any Chuck Berry in LCD Soundsystem.…

Alumni Spotlight: Adventure Park at Long Island

Lorrie Funtleyder, MBA Class of 2000

If you told me 15 years ago I would be swinging from the trees, I would have told you that you were crazy! In 1999 I was finishing up my first year at Stern. I had an internship lined up doing equity research. My future husband, Brian, was preparing himself for an internship in private equity. We were both excited to graduate in 2000 with MBAs in finance, and to get challenging Wall Street jobs.

But you would have been right! On June 20, 2014 Brian and I, along with our partners from Outdoor Ventures Group, will be cutting the ribbon at the grand opening of the Adventure Park at Long Island.…

The State of Langone

Reshama Shaikh, Langone MBA Class of 2014

The economic downturn since the financial crisis of 2008 has affected Stern as well. Prior to that, the majority of Langone students were receiving funding from their employers for their MBA studies. The CCWP was able to function with their limited resources and career opportunities for Langone students with 2 justifications. The first is that Langone students are interested in career advancement within their company and not really career changes and that is why students pursue the MBA while continuing to work full-time. The second is that it would be a conflict of interest to offer the full career service options to Langone students since they are being sponsored by their employers.…

How I Added* to my Resume, Thanks to Stern and My 6 Year Plan!

*Python, Google Analytics, R, Tableau, Gephi, HTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL

Reshama Shaikh, Langone MBA Class of 2014

My first IOMS elective was Data Mining for Business Intelligence with Professor Provost. I learned of big data, Hadoop, data mining and something about “pigs” which I ignored since I don’t eat that meat. I then thought I would do a specialization in Business Analytics. From the time I began at Stern as a Langone student, I changed my specializations more than a dozen times, but the Business Analytics one remained to the end. Unknowingly, most of the subsequent IOMS/BA classes I took were brand-new; I had partaken in an unofficial experiment.…
