Recruiting Wine Recommendations

Tara Hankinson, MBA Class of 2015

Many of my fellow MBA1s have been holed up in the second floor study rooms casing, trading finance formulas, and combing through the Four Ps. Now that classes are back in session, some of us have internships, and some of us our just beginning the recruiting journey. In this time of variable emotions, joy, fear, anxiety, apathy, I bring you a wine horoscope to match your bottle with your feelings.

You have an offer: Celebrate with Domaine Carneros Brut Rosé

As an MBA1 with an offer, you now have the luxury of enjoying class and actually keeping at pace with homework and readings, instead of awkwardly nibbling cheese squares with strangers three times a week at recruiting events.…

Rizzo & Friends Review: Holiday Break Travels

Topkap? Palace – Istanbul, Turkey
Courtney Rizzo, MBA Class of 2015

Rizzo1

“If I were building myself a palace, I would copy this design,” I told my brother. We were in Istanbul, touring the grounds of Topkap? Palace, the former residence of the Ottoman Sultans. Strolling through the interconnected courtyards, where gardens were dotted with lushly decorated pavilions and views of the Bosphorus Straight and Golden Horn, you got the idea of how wonderful it would be to live there. The gardens were always looking beautiful and well maintained for tourists, using services similar to trugreen to keep on top of this.…

NETFLIX THIS! CONFESSIONS OF A CORD CUTTER

Matt Nathanson, MBA Class of 2015

I was sick of paying to watch over-lit performances by impertinent bands like Dispatch on the Palladia Network. I was sick of NBC’s broken faucet of sitcom drivel, I wanted to kill the creators of SEAN SAVES THE WORLD, and I really missed 30 Rock. I was sick of reruns of SNL. I was sick of new episodes of SNL. I was sick of spotty internet. So I cut the cord.

I cut the cord. No more TV. No more TV.

More and more people I know are doing this, perhaps that’s what inspired me to do it.…

Notes from KW / Rumor Has It

Krystal Walker, MBA Class of 2014

All you need is two weeks at Stern to learn that this place is a rumor mill. Gossip travels at the speed at light in this place. In November I learned from two different people that there was rumor that I had made out with a certain individual. The rumor was totally false, although if I’m being completely honest, I kind of wish it were true…moving on.

Now I am in know way passing judgment, because if I am being completely honest, I am a active participant in keeping the mill turning, playing both victim(see above) and perpetrator.…

LA: Wanderland

JM Hemsley, MBA Class of 2015

I’m fresh off a stretch of informationals with Warner Bros., Sony, Fox Lionsgate, and NBC – all great and informative, and there’s plenty left to do on our LA Trek. I’ve got some time though. Later tonight there’s this party in Hollywood where I’m supposed to play nice with a mix of MBA students from competing schools. Most of my classmates have just arrived here in LA. I’ve been here for nearly a week, but I feel like I just don’t get this city. For the most part I’ve been taking LA by the streets – Sunset, Wilshire, Mulholland, and the PCH – passing by my windshield as I drive, or cruising the different vibes along the beach from Malibu to Manhattan.…

DBi: Israel

Elspeth Rollert, MBA Class of 2014

This past January, twenty-nine NYU Stern and Langone students representing thirteen nationalities traveled to Israel for a two-week DBI program. The course’s aim was to help students better understand the dynamics of the Israeli entrepreneurial environment. Through a partnership with Tel Aviv University’s Recanatic Business School, students attended lectures on the Israeli economy, concentrating on companies differing in size, industry, and life cycle. Beyond the classroom, coursework included several company visits ranging from start-ups such as Kaiima (seed and breeding-technology company) and Infinity Augmented Reality (software platform provider for the digital eyewear experience) to multinational corporations such as pharmaceutical giant Teva.…

In Vino, Victory

Alex Reicherter, MBA Class of 2014

The date is January 21; the time 6:00PM.  The temperature in New York is well before freezing, and the city is in the depths of a freak storm that would deposit almost a foot of snow on the streets.  I am with Adam Teeter (Langone ’14) and Michael Modisett (Langone ’15) at the French Consulate on 5th Avenue, and we are about to embark on the toughest challenge of our lives.

We are in the semi-finals of the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup, a competition between top business and law schools to test knowledge of the history, culture and taste profiles of France’s premier wine-producing region.…

Getting Back on Track

Becca Gardner, MBA Class of 2015

Coming from a southern family of psychologists and psychiatrists, there are two things I can always be sure that the holiday season will not have in shortage: psychoanalysis and carbohydrates. Saying “no,” to my mother’s biscuits is met with the same horror as when my dad tells her she can’t keep a stray dog she picked up on the side of the road. If it wasn’t already obvious, I’ll go ahead and confirm for you that my trip to the family farm is always a far cry from any detox in Canyon Ranch. Unfortunately, if there is one thing in the world I am better at than eating biscuits, it’s justifying the dreadful deed.…

Personalitini: Tales of Drinks and Dates / Is Settling for Ok…OK?

Liz Batsche, MBA Class of 2014

Blame it on movies, music and television. As far as I can remember, I’ve been sold the idea that I’m going to meet someone and be swept off my feet into a world of bliss. I won’t be able to contain the butterflies and I will be overwhelmed with feelings of happiness. Even Carrie ends up with Big in the end! Over the course of the holidays, many of my close friends have experienced significant milestones in their relationships. My Facebook News Feed was in overdrive with the news of Engagements, Marriages and Pregnancies. In comparison, my success in romantic relationships has been questionable.…

DBi: Brazil

Cassie Valentin, MBA Class of 2014

What do you think of when you think of Brazil? Futbol? Havianas? A Brazilian wax? This was one of the first questions posed to my DBI class in Sao Paolo this January and indeed, many of us came up with similar descriptions. However, one of the best things about a DBI is being able to look beyond the obvious and into the true complexities of a culture.

One thing I learned? Brazilians like to talk – a lot. It was not uncommon that we would find ourselves caught in a 5 minute answer to a presumingly simple question.…
