Notes from KW / Managing Change: An Exercise in Not Losing One’s Sense of Self

Krystal Walker, MBA Class of 2014

A recent move unearthed a note I had written to myself the night before I started Stern. Concerned with the amount of change about to enter my life I made a list of 6 things I needed to do to maintain my sense of self. The list encompassed spiritual goals, as well as utilized tools to make sure I could increase the ROI on my b-school investment. Below is the list, ranked in order of importance, and a grade for my performance—this whole exercise feels like a personal CFE.

1. Church Attendance/Scripture Study: put this in place to make sure that I didn’t forget to develop my spirituality while enhancing my business acumen.…

Trial and Terroir: Combating the Winter Doldrums

Tara Hankinson, MBA Class of 2015

Wine-Tara3In January we ungratefully received three snow storms that clogged my neighborhood streets with ice and dirty slush. Now we are in the throes of February, still having to drag our snow boots and arctic regalia through the streets and subways, before attempting to stuff it into our ten inch wide lockers. While we pine for spring break, here are recommendations to match with your winter mood, whether it’s delight or denial.

You are the eternal winter optimist: Spring is right around the corner with sparkling wine
You probably do not have to wait on an exposed subway platform, or dodge salt-soaked, dirty backpacks on subway.…

Rizzo Reviews: Billy Budd

Courtney Rizzo, MBA Class of 2015

I didn’t mind spending my Tuesday night on an emotional journey with a ship full of men. Ok, I was just in the audience at Brooklyn Academy of Music to see Benjamin Britten’s opera Billy Budd, but it’s still a shame that it had to end so tragically.

Billy Budd

Young Billy’s first misfortune is to be delivered to his 1797 British naval assignment by a merchant ship called Rights o’ Man. The original source for the opera Billy Budd is the novella by Herman Melville, and Melville named this ship after Thomas Paine’s 1791 Rights of Man, a work in support of the popular revolution in France.…

Andiamo a Milano

Rebecca and Zachary Weinberg, Langone MBA Class of 2014

Both of us stared out the window in a euphoric gaze as the plane left the ground. “Andiamo a Milano.” This was all the Italian we knew as we embarked on the 9-hour flight to Milan on a Sunday afternoon in late August.

A husband and wife team. We’d made it through the GMATs, business school applications, and 2.5 years of classes together. We had both just left our full-time jobs, our cozy apartment, and the rest of our commitments behind, and this was to be the culmination of the long, intensive journey to get our MBA degrees.…

Food on the Inca Trail

Elizabeth Ginsburg, MBA Class of 2014

I spent the last week of winter break in Peru. Five of my esteemed classmates and I did the Inca Trail, the classic 4-day, 3-night hike to Machu Picchu. It is truly an unforgettable experience. The views are spectacular. Several parts of the trail are extremely difficult but many are wonderful. When booking the 4 day hike, you have to go through a tour operator. There are dozens of operators to choose from and there is really very little, at least that is apparent from their websites, distinguishing one from any other. We ended up being incredibly lucky with the operator we chose.…

Personalitini: Tales of Drinks and Dates / Broken Hearts and Bar Crawls

Liz Batsche, Full-Time MBA Class of 2014

Freedom of Speech guarantees you the right to say whatever you want. It does not, however, guarantee that there will be no consequences. My last article ended up being polarizing between single and coupled readers a like. I am pleased that people reached out to me with opinions for two reasons. Firstly, it shows me that you read that article (yay!). Secondly, and more importantly, it shows me that I am writing about topics that matter. I do not write the articles with the hope that you will agree with my opinions. If anything, I write them with the hope that it will start a dialogue or at least cause one to consider reexamining existing perceptions.…

SWIB Conference Continues to Reframe the Conversation on Women in Business

Lilian Tan, MBA Class of 2014

As she spoke about her experience working with female survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Francine LeFrak gently pulled up her sleeve to show off the glint of a beaded, gold-colored bracelet under the bright lights of the Kimmel Center stage. The bracelet was a piece of handmade jewelry from SAME SKY, an organization that empowers female artisans in Sub-Saharan Africa to become self-employed and self-sufficient.

“When you have the power of a group, you get connections that give you the confidence to go further,” LeFrak said about the organization’s work. “I believe in the philosophy, dream it, do it.”…

Challenge & Acceptance – An Alumni Perspective

[Editor’s Note: The letter below incorrectly attributes some statements to Dr. Haidt, and includes incomplete quotations for others. Attached are complete third party transcripts of both the video shown in class and Dr. Haidt’s apology.]

Joshua Cohen, MBA Class of 2013

Dean Henry,

I am writing as a recent LGBT alumnus and former member of the Outclass executive committee to express my concern and genuine sadness about comments made by Dr. Jonathan Haidt during this year’s professional responsibility course, and your response to those comments to the Stern community.

I think the best way to start this letter is from a place of mutual understanding.

Stern Sweethearts

In honor of Valentine’s Day, the Office of Development & Alumni Relations is pleased to present the eighth annual installment of “Stern Sweethearts”-a profile of couples who attended Stern together. This year’s edition includes both couples who met during their time here at Stern, and others whose relationships were solidified as they pursued their degrees together. These stories are a true celebration of the many exciting facets of romance, from the very beginnings of courtship and engagements to the welcoming of children and long-lasting marriages. As these stories illustrate, love has a magical way of bringing people together, often when they least expect it.…
