The Secret to Happiness

Judy Shen, Langone MBA Class of 2013

You just arrived at a Stern Networking event, picked up a glass of ice-cold beer at the bar, and overheard two students having a conversation that goes something like this – “Hi, What’s your name?”, “Where are you from?”,  What types of jobs/industry are you interested in?”. Okay, another Business school small chat going on. Well, if you think about it, most of us came to Business school motivated by the last question. Many people may have already found their answer, but most people spend countless hours researching about different industries, attending networking events, and sitting in corporate presentations to plant the trail that will lead them to their answer.…

Matt Reviews: Dallas Buyers Club

Matt Nathanson, MBA Class of 2015

A film by Jean-Marc Vallée

For many Thanksgiving Time means possibly-overcooked turkey and forced small talk with your aunt’s sketchy new “friend” Maurice; for me, the few days respite the holiday provides allows me to engage in something I love but have barely had the time for since starting at Stern: going to the movies.

Besides a late-night foray to see GRAVITY 3D (which was more a theme park ride than a film; and a B minus at that), I’ve seen just about bupkiss since September—so last night, leftovers in my belly, I headed to the theater to get me some good ‘ol fashioned culture.…

Rizzo Reviews: Dallas Buyers Club

Courtney Rizzo, MBA Class of 2015

As many of us find ourselves for the first time in years going back to the parents’ house for an extended holiday break, a movie can be fantastic activity for killing a couple hours. For my family, having already reached capacity of holiday TV specials, we chose to go see the recently released Dallas Buyers Club. “You know, the one with Matthew MacKonnie-hay-hay?” Dad says. Oh yes, Matthew McConaughey. He’s that heartthrob from Failure to Launch and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, right?

Well, you haven’t met THIS Matthew McConaughey.…

Review Revue: Fight

In the days running up to the submission deadline for this issue of the Oppy, Courtney and Matt both sent me reviews of Jean-Marc Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club, the heart-wrenching drama starring Matthew McConaughey and based on the true-life tale of Ron Woodroof. Rather than choose between them and risk losing the slighted columnist forever, I’ve decided to run both reviews and fill up most of this page.

True to Courtney’s typical style, her review is a no-nonsense professional job, which offers its bi-weekly breath of fresh air in what would otherwise be exclusively the stinky cloud of the Leonard N.

Gluten-Free Eats Near Campus

By Victoria Fabiano, Langone Class of 2015

What is gluten you ask? Gluten is a protein composite in foods processed from wheat and other cereal grains. It’s obvious that people who are gluten-free can’t have bread or cake, but there are a variety of other things that contain gluten, like soy sauce and Twizzlers! Bottom line, it makes some people, like me, really ill.

So, if you’re celiac (aka, a glutard, according to urban dictionary) or just voluntarily gluten-free, here is a list of non-cardboard tasting gluten-free eats around campus:

Crumbs – Gluten Free
37 East 8th St (University/Broadway)
212 673 1500

Crumbs jumped on the g-free bandwagon and opened a completely gluten-free location just a stone’s throw from campus.…

A few beers with Professor David Juran

Brett Baptist, MBA Class of 2013

Brett Baptist: So you just got back from a trip to baseball Spring Training in Florida. Who’s your team?

David Juran: The Dodgers, but I haven’t seen them play in a long time. They used to hold spring training in Florida but now they do it in Arizona.

Did you grow up in Los Angeles?

Southern California, about 80 miles from L.A in a town called Redlands, which is east of L.A. and halfway to Palm Springs. I went to UCLA for undergrad – America’s team.

Yet you went to Cornell? Must have been a shock to the system to go from southern California to Ithaca.

Finding Opportunities in Turbulent Times / 13th Annual SIMR Conference

Justin Siken, MBA Class of 2015

When the economy began recovering from the financial crisis several years ago many experts warned investors to prepare for a future of lower market returns. However, despite persistent fiscal and monetary uncertainty in the United States and Europe, many asset classes have greatly exceeded historical returns and are trading at or near their all-time nominal highs. Finding pockets of remaining value and immunizing against the risks still in the system have become focuses for the investment community. If you need investment advice, take a look at Stocktrades Canadian dividend stocks. However finding the best investment for you might be difficult if you are new to stock trading, luckily there are companies similar to IronFX that may be able to help with pointing you in the right direction when it comes to trading.…

KW's Year in Review

Krystal Walker, MBA Class of 2014

It’s that time of year again… No I’m not talking about the hell that is finals period at Stern. Nor am I talking about the act of decking halls with boughs of holly. I live in the Palladium – I don’t have room for “boughs,” maybe a “sprig” if I pin it to the ceiling. Rather I’m referencing the bounty of “Year-In-Review” lists that populate our media outlets at this time of year reminding us of the highs and lows of our society during the past year. Well in the spirit of said lists, here is a list of Highs & Lows of Fall 2013-Stern Edition.…

Doodle Dictionary

Dan Gidycz, MBA Class of 2014

We all love (or should love) Doodle, the simple but brilliant online service that makes it possible for study groups to sit down long enough to divide up projects, and more than 4 people to decide when, to say nothing of where, to host a wild happy hour.

However, through communication with my fellow LAUNCH Captains (Regular readers of this tabloid will recall that LAUNCH must always be capitalized) I learned that few people are familiar with the loose collection of special Doodle circumstances and their names. As I began to share these with my cohort, support grew for them to be collected into a short glossary and included in the pages of this rag, which is a cacophemism for a periodical, especially one lacking journalistic quality.…
