Krystal Walker, MBA Class of 2014
In honor of the Oppy’s Music issue I decided to describe the last year and a half of my life via a playlist. . It’s a mix of Drake, Chaka Khan, Miley Cyrus, Gotye, Guns N’ Roses and Beyonce… you’re welcome.
Getting into Stern
Getting off the waitlist and being accepted into Stern
Song: “Love on Top”
Key Lyrics: “Baby, baby, its you, you’re the one I want, you’re the one I need, you’re the only I see. Come on baby it’s you…when I need you, you make everything stop, finally you put my love on top.”
Notes: Literally had this on repeat for a week when I got my acceptance letter!
Signing my loan agreement
Song: “The Motto”
Artist: Drake, featuring Lil Wayne
Key Lyrics: “You only live once that’s the motto, n****, YOLO. And we bout it every day, every day, every day…F*** what anybody say. Can’t see ‘em cuz the money in the way.”
Notes: Clearly I’m not listening to the radio edited version…
Fall Semester, First Year
Rolling into Launch with my summer start crew
Artist: Kanye West, featuring Big Sean, Jay Z
Key Lyrics: “Ain’t nobody fresher than my clique, clique, clique…As I look around, the don’t do it like my clique, clique, clique.”
Notes: Fellow summer starters, don’t hate me, but let’s be honest, at times we appeared a bit exclusive.
Learning that the rest of the Stern Class is just as awesome as your summer start clique, and that we’re all in this together.
Song: “We Are Family”
Artist: Sister Sledge
Key Lyrics: “Everyone can see we’re together, as we walk on by. And we fly just like birds of a feather, I won’t tell no lie”
Notes: MBA2’s remember the first night of Launch, when we headed to West 3rd Common after having dinner at Ellis Island? Yeah, it was special for me too.
Participating in your first recruiting circle at a Corporate Presentation
Song: “Welcome to the Jungle”
Artist: Guns N’ Roses
Key Lyrics: “Welcome to the jungle we take it day by day. If you want it you’re gonna bleed but it’s the price you pay…you learn to live like an animal in the jungle where we play. If you got a hunger for what you see, you’ll take it eventually.”
Notes: Those circles can be tough
How my non-stern friends feel about me since I started school
Song: “Somebody that I used to know”
Key Lyrics: “But you treat me like a stranger and it feels so rough.”
Notes: Your relationships outside of stern are the casualties of this experience—alas real friends forgive a 2 year absence…right?
Realizing midway thru the fall semester that you’re over committed
Song: “Under Pressure”
Key Lyrics: “Pressure pushing down on me. Pressing down on you…Insanity laughs under pressure we’re cracking. Can’t we give ourselves one more chance?”
After you get that first rejection for a summer offer, and you go to OCD for a pep talk. Points if you got your pep talk from Beth Briggs.
Song: “Don’t Stop Believin’”
Key Lyrics: “Workin’ hard just to get my fill. Everybody wants a thrill. Payin’ anything to roll the dice just one more time…Don’t stop believin’, just hold on to that feeling.”
Hearing the horrors that can occur in Corporate Finance, but deciding to register for the class anyway
Song: “Hopelessly Devoted To You”
Artist: Olivia Newton John
Key Lyrics: “My head is saying, ‘Fool, forget him.’ My heart is saying ‘Don’t let go. Hold on till the end.” And that’s what I intend to do, I’m hopelessly devoted to you.”
Spring Semester, First Year
Realizing that you have to work harder, faster, smarter during Spring Semester.
Artist: Kanye West
Key Lyrics: “Work it, make it, do it, makes us harder, better, faster, stronger”
Notes: Spring Semester, First Year, a beast. I don’t know what makes it so hectic. Maybe it’s the perfect storm of the transitioning of club leadership, noncore classes that are more demanding and time consuming, and committing to participate in Stern Consulting Corps…what ever it was, I felt like I was often pushed to the limit. MBA1s you’ve been warned.
Going on the Trek to South Africa
Song: “Bandz A Make Her Dance”
Artist: Juicy J, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne
Key Lyrics: “We get trippy, and then some.”
Notes: Regardless of which one you went on, things tend to get a little reckless on treks—in a good way. And when I think of recklessness (Sandeep Prabhu, this is for you), I think of the lyrics in “Bandz.” Hence the song choice.
Working on Damodaran’s Corporate Finance Project
Artist: Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson
Key Lyrics: “Kicking me down, got to get up, as jacked as it sounds the whole system sucks…with such confusions don’t it make you wanna scream?”
Notes: I have entire playlists dedicated the emotional rollercoaster this class put me through…alas I have no regrets.
Reflecting on the First Year at Stern
Song: “Through the Fire”
Artist: Chaka Khan
Key Lyrics: “Through the fire, to the limit, to the wall. For a chance to be with you, I’d gladly risk it all.”
Notes: First year was totally worth it.
Working for the first time in a year
Song: “She Works Hard For The Money”
Artist: Donna Summers
Key Lyrics: “It’s a sacrifice working day to day”
Counting down the days until the end of my internship so I can return to Stern
Song: “Hold on We’re Going Home”
Key Lyrics: “I got my eyes on you, you’re the only one I see…I cant get over you, you left your mark on me…Just hold on we’re going home, it’s hard to do these things alone.”
Notes: Special thanks to the Sternie who sent me this song during my time in Dallas. This song gave me hope.
Fall Semester, Second Year
Walking into Stern as a MBA 2
Song: “Swagga Like Us”
Artist: T.I., featuring Jay Z, Kanye West, & Lil Wayne
Key Lyrics: “No one on the corner got swagga like us”
Spending the first half of your MBA 2 Fall Semester recruiting for consulting and having zero offers to show for it
Song: “Wrecking Ball”
Key Lyrics:” I came in like a wrecking ball, I never hit so hard in love. All I wanted was to break your walls, but all you ever did was wreck me.”
Notes: Writing about it in the oppy helps me cope.
Realizing that it takes time to find the right job for you
Song: ”Anything Could Happen”
Artist: Ellie Goulding
Key Lyrics: “But now I’ve seen it through, and now I know the truth, that anything could happen”
Notes: Optimism, it gets me every time
Realizing you’ve only got one more year to party recklessly with your Stern Class, so you can’t spend time on things you can’t control.
Artist: Kool & The Gang
Key Lyrics: “Celebrate good times, come on!”
