THE STANDARDS

There’s a good chance you will find at least one Sternie at these bars at any given moment. These are the Stern standards, which you’ll end up getting to know very well (for better or worse).

What the H is SGov and Why Should I Care?

Welcome back MBA2s! But more importantly – Welcome MBA1s! Welcome to business school and welcome to Stern. SGov wants to kick off the year by telling MBA1s a little bit about SGov, and letting MBA2s know about some of the exciting changes since last year.

MBA1s:

In the coming weeks you will be inundated with information, speakers, schedules, inspiration, alcohol, knowledge and the fact that it is all about cities. You will tell your story 50 times a day. You will discuss your future plans. You will be a bit nervous, very excited and at times overwhelmed with the amount of STUFF you need to do.…

Genius & Thom Yorke

Karibi Dagogo-Jack, MBA Class of 2014

The word “genius” has recently become devalued through overuse. If A-Rod (one of the very few Major League Baseball players to have been censured for steroid use twice) can be described as a genius for turning a double play then what the hell was Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood. Or, Madame Curie, for that matter. That being said, genius is just about the most straightforward description of Thom Yorke. Yorke, the leader of the bands Radiohead and Atoms for Peace, is one of the most important musicians of his generation. Blessed with a wisp of a voice that can beautifully conjure disaffection and lament, Yorke’s influence is evident on followers from Coldplay to Arcade Fire.…

Personalitini: Tales of Drinks and Dates

Liz Batsche, MBA Class of 2014

Personalitini

Welcome to New York City! Welcome to Stern! Welcome to a Dating Challenging Environment!

Hello there! Sit down, pour yourself a drink and get comfortable! My name is Liz Batsche and I’m an MBA2. Don’t worry, you can introduce yourself later. You may be wondering, what the !@#$ does Personalitini mean? I think I may need to clarify since one time on an OKCupid date (more on that later) I was asked if this meant I had a tiny (“tini”) personality. This date not only lacked intelligence but the resemblance of his posted photos; I am typically down for a surprise, but not in this case!…

Launch Cliff – Will It Happen to Me?

Cassidy Morris, MBA Class of 2014

The short answer is Yes, Launch Cliff will happen to you, NYU Stern Class of 2015. Everyone will experience Launch Cliff in some way. It might be right after the final event on Thursday, August 27 or after the first full day of classes on September 3 or after the OCD emails start arriving. Regardless of when, just know it will happen.

Launch Cliff is when reality sets in, and the motivational wave you ride high into the first semester crashes against core course requirements, club board positions and events, recruiting and networking, or making friends at Beer Blast or over a WBL (white-boxed lunch).…

Notes from KW

Krystal Walker, MBA Class of 2014

Sometimes all it takes is one bad day to make you rethink your decision to attend Stern. My bad day included seeing my grade on Damodaran’s Corporate Finance final. It was a classic case of the result not matching the effort exerted and it led me down a rabbit hole of regret. As I thought of the thousands of dollars spent, the countless all-nighters, and the earnings foregone, I was overcome with the feeling that I had made a costly mistake; one that I would be paying off the rest of my adult life. While these thoughts mounted in my mind, I looked for a distraction, which Facebook faithfully delivered.…

Answers to New Sternies Frequently Asked Questions

Dan Gidycz, MBA Class of 2014

Here you are! Newly arrived from around the world and across the street, bright eyed and confused about just what exactly it is that you’ve gotten yourself into. And all that is just great – you’re going to learn a whole mess about what does and does not constitute business casual attire, and probably also that hangovers last twice as long at 27 as they did at 19.

Good for you.

But chances are you have some burning questions!

For example, you probably want to know how to plan a networking strategy to guarantee a meaningful audience with recruiters and executives at both Apple and Goldman, or how to maximize the value of your tuition dollars by taking classes that offer training with the greatest applicability and longest shelf-life.…
